ED raids multiple Kolkata locations in multi-crore lottery fraud probe
Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids and search operations in and around Kolkata in connection to a multi-crore alleged financial fraud and money laundering through lottery tickets. Three teams of the central agency officials carried raids and search operations in at least three locations in Kolkata. The central agency officials carried out raids in at least three locations in Kolkata, Madhyamgram area in North 24 Parganas district and two other locations. In Madhyamgram's Michael Nagar, raids and searches were conducted in a lottery-ticket printing factory. The other two places where raid and search operations were conducted were at Lake Market and Lake Gardens in South Kolkata. The central agency also conducted raids at the offices-cum-residences of two lottery agents, people in the know said. Multiple charges against the lottery scam include evasion of taxes and diversion of the proceeds of the income illegally.

Aspirants continue to protest even as UPPSC exams reverts to old pattern
Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) accepted one demand of the aspirants to hold the Provincial Civil Services preliminary examinations on a single day on the old pattern, the trouble for the state administration could not come to an end. Reports reaching here said several aspirants continue to protest in front the UPPSC headquarters in Prayagraj in support of their other demand to hold Review Officers (ROs) and Assistant Review Officers (AROs) examinations in one shift on a single day. However, the UPPSC has decided to postpone the ROs and AROs examinations-2023, which were scheduled to be held in three shifts on December 22 and 23.

Honasa Consumer slips into Rs 19 crore loss on restructuring; operating revenue takes a hit too
Honasa Consumer, the parent company of beauty and personal care brand Mamaearth, reported a decline in its operating revenue for the September quarter while also slipping into losses, on account of a significant hit from its offline distribution restructuring exercise. For the July-September period, Honasa Consumer reported a 7% year-on-year (YoY) decline in operating revenue at Rs 462 crore. It posted a net loss of Rs 19 crore in the quarter, compared to Rs 30 crore net profit in the same period last year. “The impact (of the restructuring) was actually higher than what we had planned and expected…we initially had certain assumptions in place, which were based on a certain level of inventory but when we got into the actual execution, it turned out to be relatively higher,” the company’s founder and CEO Varun Alagh told ET.

Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health in Bengaluru. He called SMA a rare and often devastating genetic disorder while adding this initiative as a transformative one for patients from low-income families. The government has established a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases (COERD) at the institute. «We are proud to share that this is the first such centre in the country to enrol 100 beneficiaries under the National policy for the Rare Diseases,» the minister said. Since 2016, the government has been supporting patients with rare diseases and has provided Rs 75 crore as additional fund for the treatment of rare diseases. «We are also investing in infrastructure, training, and outreach to improve early diagnosis, making Karnataka a leader in addressing rare diseases,» Dr Patil said.

US weekly jobless claims fall; unemployment rolls shrink
unemployment benefits fell last week, suggesting the labor market continued to chug along and that the abrupt slowdown in job growth in October was an aberration. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 217,000 for the week ended Nov. 9, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 223,000 claims for the latest week. Claims surged in early October amid distortions from Hurricanes Helene and Milton as a well as a strike by factory workers at Boeing, but layoffs have remained historically low, which is underpinning the economy.

Two logistics firms selected to set up ecommerce export hubs on pilot basis around Delhi
Logistics aggregator Shiprocket and air cargo handling company Cargo Service Centre (CSC) have been selected by the government on a pilot basis to set up ecommerce export hubs in the country, a senior official said on Thursday. The ecommerce export hubs (EECH) will come in and around Delhi airport and begin operations in February next year, Director General of Foreign Trade Santosh Kumar Sarangi told reporters here. While Shiprocket is headquartered in Gurugram, the CSC is Mumbai-based.

RIL, Viacom18 and Disney complete merger to create a Rs 70,352 cr JV
Reliance Industries Limited, Viacom18 Media Private Limited, and The Walt Disney Company announced on Thursday that the merger of Viacom18's media and JioCinema businesses into Star India Private Limited (SIPL) is now officially effective. The transaction values the joint venture at Rs 70,352 crore (~US$ 8.5 billion) on a post-money basis, excluding synergies. At the closing of the transactions, the JV is controlled by RIL and owned 16.34% by RIL, 46.82% by Viacom18 and 36.84% by Disney. The JV will be led by Nita M. Ambani, Chairperson, and Uday Shankar, Vice Chairperson, who will offer strategic guidance.
