Qcomm a hit, FMCG firms dress up to ace screen test
Consumer goods makers are sharpening their focus on packaging for daily essentials and groceries as “on-screen looks” gain prominence for enticing consumers on quick commerce platforms, executives said. These companies are overhauling packaging for a wide array of products spanning impulse items such as cookies and juices, and staples such as rice and edible oil, the executives said. “We are finding that packaging that seeks and draws attention is making a huge difference to quick commerce sales for on-screen browsing by consumers,” said Mayank Shah, vice president of Parle Products, which makes bakery products, biscuits and salty snacks. Parle has introduced ecommerce specific packs for its biscuit brands Milano and Hide & Seek.

AI opportunity: Hope to see an emerging Indian company among top ten global firms in next 10 years, says Aswath Damodaran
Aswath Damodaran, Professor, Stern School of Business, NYU, says AI is set to be a key frontier for emerging companies. If this sector grows significantly, it raises the question of whether the top five companies will remain US-based. It would be encouraging to see at least one Indian company among these leaders. Damodaran thinks Europe may struggle to produce a major player. Indian firms have a unique opportunity now, especially since China has restricted its major tech players like Tencent, JD, and Alibaba, limiting their potential to invest in AI. This creates a chance for India to capitalize on the situation, but it will require significant effort. If a prominent Indian tech company appears among the top ten global firms by market capitalization in the next decade, it would be an exciting development.

Green GST tax may help buyers shift towards greener cars, says Vikram Pawah, president of BMW Group India
green GST (goods and services tax)' on cars-where the tax rate goes up or down based on the vehicle's emission levels-will be the ideal path towards achieving carbon neutrality, said Vikram Pawah, president of BMW Group India. The gradient will incline consumers towards buying greener cars, he told ET. «Ideally there should be a green GST...the greener the car, the lower is the GST,» Pawah said on the sidelines of the launch of the BMW M4 CS high-performance sedan in Mumbai.

Global sunroof companies look to ride the giant India wave
car sunroofs is pushing the world’s leading makers of the feature to join local partners in ramping up investments to tap this burgeoning market. Netherlands-based Inalfa Roof Systems along with its partner Gabriel India is looking to double capacity for manufacturing sunroofs in the next one year. The duo, which opened their first plant in Chennai in the first quarter of 2024, can currently produce up to 200,000 sunroofs annually. Germany’s Webasto—a global leader in openable sunroofs—has started work to nearly double production capacity in the Indian market to 950,000 units per year by 2027, from the current 500,000 units. Auto parts maker Uno Minda inked a technical licence agreement this August with Japan’s Aisin Corp., among the world’s top 10 Tier I component suppliers, to locally manufacture and sell vehicle sunroofs. “The Indian automotive market is witnessing a remarkable shift, with sunroofs rapidly becoming a sought-after feature,” said NK Minda, chairman and managing director, Uno Minda. “Sunroofs have seen multifold growth in recent years. This trend is only set to accelerate as sunroofs, once limited to larger SUVs and MUVs, are now increasingly finding their way into hatchbacks.”

Junior docs call off 'total cease work'; threaten hunger strike if demands not met within 24 hrs
junior doctors demanding justice for the RG Kar medic on Friday evening called off their 'total cease work' at state-run medical colleges and hospitals but threatened to launch a hunger strike till death if their demands were not met by the West Bengal government within 24 hours. «We are calling off our 'total cease work' and returning to duties. But we will continue our sit-in protest. We will give the state administration 24 hours to fulfill our demands or else we will start a hunger strike till death,» an agitating doctor, Debasish Halder of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, said. Braving the incessant drizzle, junior doctors holding one big clock in their hands reiterated their demands including the directive to form a central inquiry committee for disciplinary proceedings against alleged perpetrators involved in «threat culture» in all medical colleges of West Bengal, among others. «But the state government must not think that we are calling off our agitation as we are scared. If they think there is nobody with us, they are wrong. We have full support of the common people,» he said.
