Rate sensitivity on the rise in PSB portfolios
interest rate sensitivity of a major trading portfolio for state-owned public sector banks and foreign banks increased from September 2023 to March this year, implying greater exposure to the impact that volatility in bond yields can have on profits and capital. «The AFS (available for sale) portfolio's sensitivity (PV01) increased for PSBs (public sector banks) and FBs (foreign banks) since September 2023, while it declined for PVBs (private banks),» the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in its June 2024 Financial Stability Report.

FATF lauds India efforts to combat laundering and terrorist financing
mutual evaluation report (MER) that the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) adopted at its meeting in Singapore recognised the Indian government's achievements in fighting money laundering and the funding of terrorism, the finance ministry said. «The MER adopted in the FATF plenary places India in the 'regular follow-up' category, a distinction shared by only four other G20 countries,» the finance ministry said in a statement on Friday. «This marks a significant milestone in the nation's efforts to combat money laundering (ML) and terrorist financing (TF).» The MER assessed the effectiveness of India's measures to combat money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing, as well as its compliance with FATF norms, the intergovernmental body said in a statement on Friday. «India has reached a high level of technical compliance with the FATF requirements and its anti-money laundering and terrorist financing regime is achieving good results,» the FATF noted.

India vs South Africa T20 World Cup Final: Food Inc eyes quicker commerce on match day
food delivery platforms, restaurants and consumer brands are gearing up for a surge in orders as India takes on South Africa in the T20 World Cup final on Saturday. As the national men's cricket team aims to end the drought for an ICC trophy, bars and restaurants that plan to screen the match for fans back home expect to host a full-house and also cater to an increase of 20% to 50% in their online sales. «Events like these often see a joint viewership, and that leads to a surge in large orders with different components as various members have different preferences,» said Sagar Kochhar, cofounder of cloud kitchen startup Rebel Foods, which runs popular brands like Faasos, Behrouz Biryani, Oven Story, and Wendy's India.

After Jio, Airtel and Vi answer revenue call, dial up tariffs
Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) increased mobile tariffs by 11-20% and 10-23%, respectively, to boost average revenue per user (ARPU), a day after Reliance Jio announced higher rates, making this the first wide-ranging headline price increase since November 2021. While Airtel and Jio — which dominate the market — say they need to improve returns after paying high prices for 5G airwaves in 2022, Vi is looking to back up its recent ₹23,000 crore equity fundraising efforts as it strives to become more competitive, stem user losses and repair a stressed balance sheet to pay vendors and statutory dues. Analysts said the three telcos will see a 13-17% rise in ARPU with the main effect being felt in second and third quarters of this fiscal year. Airtel and Vi have been vocal about increasing ARPU at an industry level for a sustainable telecom sector.

FSSAI ready to shake up protein powder space
protein supplements, powders and shakes without authorised medical certifications or with misleading labelling claims, said people with knowledge of the matter. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is set to release tighter regulations on protein supplements, after it conducted a study which revealed that dozens of protein powders and supplements were being sold at store shelves, gymnasiums and e-commerce platforms with false and misleading claims, said one of the persons. «There are a lot of protein products in the market which are more harmful than beneficial,» said an FSSAI official, who did not wish to be identified. «The idea is to have stringent norms so that there is no damage to public health.» The crackdown could lead to a ban on sale of scores of such products which do not meet the new norms, according to people in the know.

Swearing-in impasse of TMC MLAs: West Bengal speaker calls Jagdeep Dhankar, seeks his intervention
Biman Bandyopadhyay has sought the intervention of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar to resolve the stand-off over the oath-taking ceremony of the two newly-elected Trinamool MLAs. Meanwhile, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday hit out at CM Mamata Banerjee, saying, «It is expected of public representatives to abide by the Constitution and not generate erroneous and slanderous impressions, obliquely adverse to the Governor, in public mind». Bose's statement comes a day after Banerjee said that women were scared to go to the Raj Bhawan and the oath-taking ceremony of the two Trinamool MLAs could not be held after they got elected almost a month back. «The alibis floated in public domain are untenable,» Bose posted on X. Bose is now following the X Handle route like former Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, to give his statements.
