Looking for Nanda Devi: Remembering the iconic 1934 Himalayan expedition
Nanda Devi, in 1936. The book is an account of one of the most spectacular expeditions of mountain exploration ever undertaken, when, in 1934, Shipton, along with compatriot Bill Tilman and the Nepalese Sherpas Ang Tharkay, Pasang Bhutia and Kusang, became the first people ever to find a way into the inner sanctuary of Nanda Devi, in the Garhwal Himalaya. Ever since the dawn of mountaineering, a greater premium has been placed on the summitting of peaks, in large part driven by a colonialist narrative of conquest.

GST Council proposes interest, penalty waiver on tax dues
waive interest and penalties on past tax demands, reduced the pre-deposit amount for filing appeals, fixed monetary limits for appeals against assessees at various legal forums and set a sunset date for anti-profiteering cases in a range of decisions aimed at easing doing business in the country. “Our intent is to make GST assessees’ life easier, simpler and less cumbersome… We are working towards less and less compliance,” Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, chairperson of the body, told reporters after the council’s 53rd meeting that was held in the capital. The council will take up pending reform measures when it meets next, likely by August end. Saturday’s measures by the council at its first meeting after the formation of the new government at the Centre could bring relief to multiple sectors, including shipping, airlines, insurance and nonbanking financial companies (NBFCs) facing large tax demands, said experts.

Like a true blockbuster, Euro 2024 has everything – action, emotion, comedy, drama, gastronomy, and goals
Let’s start with World Peace. For long, its proponents have looked down upon the plebeian influences of football. There is an honest intent to change that. This Euro continues with the previous one’s emotion of loving thy enemy. Germany's Antonio Rudiger played a good host by scoring one for the opponents.

India’s Olympic odyssey: From 1912 Stockholm discussions to bidding for 2036
These documents, a few of which are being reprinted for our readers, reveal a series of letters exchanged between the British Olympic Association, the International Olympic Committee and the India Office, discussing the prospects of Indian participation at the 1912 Olympics. Had this participation happened, India would have been among the first Asian countries to embrace the Olympic movement, alongside Japan, which established a national Olympic Committee in 1911 before participating in the 1912 competition.

cook for you. Few places put these two obsessions into focus as beautifully as the world of Facebook groups. I am in many food groups because I like good food and interesting recipes. The good part of food groups is that you learn about new restaurants or delivery outlets, their timings and menus, and often, group members share exciting recipes. But that's where it begins and ends. For some reason, most people in food groups write posts phonetically. It's like being in a kindergarten class, where you're trying to guess the word being spelt out. Usually, food groups are — yes — manned by men, who take their job seriously. I've seen them tick off hapless women who write down intricate recipes, but shockingly, have added pictures of the dish instead of one, as 'allowed' by admin.

Oh, for the things we loved to hate: Judwaa songs reveal big truths in politically incorrect fun
David Dhawan's 1997 Judwaa — a film Tarkovsky never lived to see, though I like to imagine he shook a leg to Disco Dancer tunes like other Russians. The clip in question had the 'Chalti hai kya nau se baara' line. I was sucked right in. I must have listened to the full song a few dozen times between then and now — and watched the scene, which has two Salman Khans performing increasingly manic dance steps. I loved the tune, rhythm, lyrics with their evocation of old-world memories like iced Mangola, but also the visuals. The audacity of it, the crass maleness, the Salman-ness, and the fantasy scenes in the police station where Anupam Kher and other cops are both moral-policing and dancing along (because multiple possibilities can co-exist in this sort of sequence).

Hardik, Kuldeep sparkle as India outclass Bangladesh by 50 runs, move closer to semis
Hardik Pandya produced an all-round show while Kuldeep Yadav foxed Bangladesh batters with his guile as India all but assured themselves of a semifinals berth through a dominant 50-run victory in their second Super 8 game of the T20 World Cup here on Saturday. Star batter Virat Kohli (37 off 28) found much-needed rhythm before Shivam Dube (34 off 24) and Hardik (50 not out off 27) pushed India to 196 for five, the highest total at this venue so far. Bangladesh could never really challenge India in the steep run-chase and ended up with 146/8 in 20 overs, their second straight loss in the Super 8s. India will meet their match in Australia, the two unbeaten teams so far, in their final Super 8 fixture in St Lucia on Monday.

Why WV Raman's credentials also deserve attention for head coach’s job
Gautam Gambhir looks set to be the Indian men’s team’s next head coach. Once Rahul Dravid made it clear that he would not be re-applying for the post at the end of the T20 World Cup, the speculation began. An unnamed foreigner was in the mix. At least two former Australian cricketers said they had received feelers from those in power, but were not interested in the job. So much so that Jay Shah, BCCI secretary, put out an official clarification that neither he nor anyone else from the Indian cricket board had approached either of these cricketers. This is just how the ecosystem works around Indian cricket. There is rarely anything simple or straightforward. And then, when it looked like Gambhir was in a one-man race, it came to light that WV Raman, another former Indian left-handed opening bat, had also applied for the job.

According to police, Darshan and his gang have so far spent Rs 78 lakh to cover up the crime and destroy material evidences. «There is lot of money involved and we don't know how much money they would have raised through unfair means to get rid of this case.
