Govt cuts security cover for Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur
A recent review of Kaur's security by central intelligence agencies has stipulated her to be placed under the Z category, the second-highest level of protection, according to the sources. Accordingly, the Union home ministry directed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) VIP security wing to scale down the number of personnel and protocol, according to the Z category, for Kaur, they said. She will have the protection of about a dozen armed commandos for her personal protection as well as for her home, the sources said. The change in categorisation of security has also led to the reduction of the number of Delhi Police personnel sanctioned for the Singhs, they said.

MS Dhoni to return as CSK captain against Delhi Capitals? Shane Watson drops a big hint
Shane Watson, former Australian all-rounder and ex-CSK star, has dropped a major hint about MS Dhoni possibly returning as captain of the Chennai Super Kings against Delhi Capitals for today’s match. When asked if Dhoni would step in as captain if Ruturaj Gaikwad is unavailable for CSK’s against DC, Watson said, «If Ruturaj doesn’t play, you’d expect MSD to step in. He’s already leading on the field, guiding Ruturaj whenever he can. So, if needed, it would be a very seamless transition for him to take over as captain.” Gaikwad was hit on his unprotected elbow during the previous clash of the ongoing 18th edition of the cash-rich league against Rajasthan Royals at Guhawati. This incident took place when the 28-year-old player stepped out on the bowling of right-arm seamer Tushar Deshpande in the second over while chasing a target of 183 runs. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey said that Gaikwad's elbow is sore right now, but he is getting better day by day. »Yeah, we're hoping he [Gaikwad] is going to try and have a bat today for training. And, yeah, it [elbow] is still a little bit sore, but it's improving every day. So, we're very hopeful that he'll be fine for tomorrow," Michael Hussey said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Rupee touches 4-month high of 84.96/$, but closes at 85.23
Indian rupee appreciated past the 85/$1 mark to touch a four-month high of 84.96, before closing at 85.23 on Friday, 20 paise stronger from its previous close of 85.43. The unit weakened in the latter half of the day due to corporate hedging demand and a slight uptick in the dollar index. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) likely absorbed dollars as the rupee appreciated past the 85/$1 mark, traders said.

Honda to test renewable tech in space soon
Honda will partner with US companies to test in orbit a renewable energy technology it hopes to one day deploy on the Moon's surface, the Japanese carmaker announced Friday. The auto giant is developing a mechanism capable of generating electricity and oxygen continuously — enabling astronauts to breathe — thanks to solar energy and water known to be present in some lunar soils. Now it plans to test this technology aboard the International Space Station, it said in a release, without giving a date. Honda already employs the system in its electric vehicles, and now wants to extend it to space to «to support life in space and on Earth.» «During the Lunar Day, the system will use electricity generated by the sun to power the process. Honda's high-differential pressure water electrolysis system will then produce hydrogen and oxygen from water,» it explained.

Volkswagen to add 'import fee' to cars sold in US
Volkswagen, the German automaker, has told its car dealers that it plans to add an import fee later this month to the price of imported cars sold in the United States. The company's move is one of the first and clearest examples of automakers using price increases to deal with the 25% tariffs President Donald Trump imposed on car and auto parts imports. The tariffs on vehicles went into effect Thursday, and the levies on parts will become effective May 3. In a Tuesday memo to dealers, Volkswagen said that the exact fees would be determined by the middle of April. The New York Times reviewed a copy of the memo. The automaker also told dealers it planned to cut back on sales incentives and had halted rail shipments of cars to the United States from its plants in Mexico, although shipments by sea continue. Volkswagen plans to hold cars that are subject to the tariffs in port for «the near term.» It also told dealers that the price of the Volkswagen Atlas sport utility vehicle, which is made in Chattanooga, Tennessee, could be affected by the tariffs because it includes important imported components. The extent of the impact most likely will not be known until May, the memo said. The automaker, including its Audi and Porsche brands, imports almost all the cars it sells in the United States. Besides the Atlas, Volkswagen also assembles the ID.4 electric sport-utility vehicle in Tennessee.

Lok Sabha adjourned sine die amid BJP-Congress sparring over Waqf Bil
Lok Sabha adjourned sine die on Friday amid government-Opposition sparring, with Speaker Om Birla criticising Sonia Gandhi's statement that the Waqf Bill was «bulldozed through» even as the Congress leadership said it would petition the Supreme Court, questioning the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill passed by Parliament. The Congress floor leaders didn't attend the customary tea at the Speaker's chamber after the adjournment of the House. When the House commenced, the BJP benches protested against the statement Sonia Gandhi had made on Wednesday in her address to party MPs.

Congress announces Ex-PM Manmohan Singh Fellowship Programme
Dr Manmohan Singh Fellowships', a programme where 50 mid-level professionals with 10 years' experience in their respective areas will be selected every year and mentored by some senior party leaders for their political career and leadership-building. While party functionaries Praveen Chakravarty and K Raju said those who will be selected for the fellowship have to show full-time commitment to enter politics with an absolute conviction for secular, progressive politics, it remains to be seen how the Congress Party, NSUI and Youth Congress' activists, who slug it out on the streets without mentorships and fellowships, will respond to this latest in a series of novel experiments — an invite for lateral entries.

Shahi Idgah case: SC issues notice on Hindu side's appeal, to examine ASI-protected status of disputed structure
Hindu petitioners in the Krishna Janmabhoomi and Shahi Idgah case, on an appeal moved by the Muslim side against an Allahabad High Court order that allowed the Hindu side to amend their suit and also make the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) a party to the case. A division bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna observed that it will examine the claim made by Hindu parties that the disputed structure is a protected monument under the ASI and cannot be used as a mosque. The March 5 HC order allowing the Hindu side's amendment application seemed to be prima facie correct, it observed. The Hindu side's application before the HC was based on the claim that an ASI-protected place cannot be used for worship as a mosque and the Places of Worship Act will not apply to such a structure. The bench posted the appeal and related matters for resumed hearing on April 8. The Hindu side initially approached the HC with an application to make ASI a party to the case. They also sought amendment to their initial plaint. At the HC, they claimed that the mosque was declared a protected monument by a 1920 notification issued by the Lieutenant Governor of the United Province under Section 3 of the Ancient Monument Preservation Act. Consequently, the Places of Worship Act, 1991 will not apply in this case and the place cannot be used as a mosque, the Hindu side argued.

IPL 2025 LSG vs MI head to head stats: Where do Hardik Panya's paltan and Rishabh Pant's men stand against each other
India captain Rohit's form with the bat has put the MI team management in a tight spot. The same is for LSG skipper Pant whose extended dry run is not helping matters for the home side. With both the teams almost identically placed with a solitary win each in three games, the contest could boil down to who exploits the conditions better on the day. Given that the curators haven't been providing tailor-made pitches to the home sides — something that has caused frustration of the coaches and players in some franchises — the team that gets a head-start with the bat or ball in the power play overs could call the shots. The prolonged absence of MI pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah due to injury and the management maintaining a stoic silence on his return is only adding to the frustration of the Hardik Pandya-led side.

Trade war: China to retaliate with more tariffs on US goods from April 10
retaliatory measures, including steep tariffs and export controls on critical materials. The Chinese Finance Ministry has said that starting April 10, Beijing will impose additional tariffs of 34% on all US goods, adding fuel to the already fiery trade war. This comes as a direct response to Trump's recent trade actions, including reciprocal tariffs at 34% and export bans targeting Chinese firms. Meanwhile, the Commerce Ministry has said it is adding 16 US entities to its export control list, further restricting their access to Chinese markets and technologies. Additionally, 11 American firms have been placed on China’s ‘unreliable entity’ list, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Tanker barred from India transferring its Russian oil at sea, sources say
The Andaman Skies is transferring its cargo of crude oil to the Sao Tome and Principe-flagged vessel Ozanno, the sources said. While many buyers have shunned Russian oil since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, India and China have remained keen buyers. India is the biggest buyer of seaborne Russian crude, which accounted for about 35% of its crude imports in 2024. However, port authorities last week barred the more than 20-year-old Andaman Skies from entering India's port of Vadinar as its seaworthiness certificate was not issued by an Indian-approved classification agency. The Tanzania-flagged vessel, carrying about 100,000 metric tons (or some 800,000 barrels) of Varandey Russian oil sold by Lukoil from the northern port of Murmansk, is sitting off the port of Mumbai in western India, LSEG shipping data shows.

US tariffs to force quicker Fed, ECB rate cuts to support growth, says Nomura
European Central Bank could cut rates as soon as this month, Nomura said. U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on dozens of countries on Wednesday, which intensified the threat of a global trade war and fuelled fears of a global economic slowdown, or even a recession. The tariffs are «worse than feared», said Nomura, lowering its U.S. GDP growth estimate to 0.6% from 1.5%, on a quarterly basis, and hiking to 4.7% from 3.5% its forecast for year-end core PCE, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge. As a result, the brokerage expects the Fed to lower rates in December, taking the policy rate to 4.125%, followed by two more 25 bps cuts in the first quarter of 2026. It had previously expected the central bank to hold at 4.25%-4.5% until the second quarter of 2026.
