UltraTech Cement Limited Aditya Birla Group on Tuesday said it is commissioning two new greenfield capacities totalling 5.4 mtpa in the states of Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu. This will take the Company’s total cement capacity to 151.6 mtpa. This capacity is more than 150 per cent of the capacity in the United States and 80 per cent of Europe's capacity, said the company in a statement. “It took 36 years for the cement business of the Aditya Birla Group, to get to a capacity of 100 mtpa. And UltraTech has subsequently added the next 50 mtpa in less than 5 years with an investment of around Rs. 32,000 crores,” it added.

Vistara pilots continue to protest against pay revision, at least 15 senior first officers resigned from the airline recently, sources said on Tuesday. The airline operates a little over 300 flights daily and has a fleet of 70 planes comprising A320-family aircraft and Boeing 787s. Over the past few weeks, the Tata Group airline has been grappling with simmering discontent among pilots, with many first officers of its A320 fleet reporting sick. The sources said at least 15 senior first officers resigned from Vistara and joined a domestic budget carrier.

Vedanta Ltd has received GST demand notices to the tune of Rs 1.86 crore for availing input tax credit, which has been termed «ineligible» by the tax authority. The company said it will file an appeal against the orders. In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, Vedanta Ltd said the Office of the Assistant Commissioner, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, has sent the GST demand notice. «The company has received orders from Office of Assistant Commissioner, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, confirming demand of GST related to Input Tax Credit availed by the company which is regarded as ineligible by such tax authority for the period from FY 2017-18 till FY 2021-22,» Vedanta said.

Sanjay Raut on Tuesday said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is still interested in holding seat-sharing talks with the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), which has already declared candidates for several Lok Sabha seats. Talking to reporters, Raut reiterated his demand to scrap electronic voting machines (EVMs) and conduct polls on ballot papers, claiming that the BJP will bear the brunt if polling is not conducted on EVMs. Prakash Ambedkar was in talks with the MVA, comprising the Congress, the Nationalist Congress (Sharadchandra Pawar) and the Shiv Sena (UBT), for the Lok Sabha polls but recently announced candidates for 20 out of 48 seats. The Sena (UBT) leader claimed that Ambedkar's party stopped talks with the MVA, which had given it a proposal for five seats, including Akola, Ramtek, Dhule and a seat in Mumbai.

The government had raised the target for direct tax collection in FY24 (April 2023 to March 2024) to Rs 19.45 lakh crore, while for indirect taxes (GST+ Customs + Excise) the target was lowered to Rs 14.84 lakh crore in the revised estimates (RE) presented in Parliament on February 1, 2024. The net direct tax collections (comprising corporate tax and personal income tax) reached over Rs 18.90 lakh crore as of March 17.

Supreme Court on Tuesday granted jailed Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh a bail during the pendency of a trial after the Enforcement Directorate said it had no objections. He was in custody amid ongoing money laundering probe in the Delhi excise policy scam case. A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice P B Varale remarked earlier that he has spent six months in jail. «Singh spent six months in jail.
