Although he had more than four days of annual leave available, he informed his supervisor that his grandfather had died in his sleep and requested three days of paid compassionate leave from November 8 to November 10. His employer approved the request, granting him the maximum number of bereavement leave days permitted by company policy.
According to reports in Channel News Asia, later that month, the company required him to submit his grandfather’s death certificate as proof to support his leave application. In response, he falsely claimed that he would only be able to provide the document after his father returned from India on November 27. By early December, his team leader insisted that he submit the certificate by December 8.
Instead of obtaining an authentic document, the employee reached out to the stepmother of a deceased friend, who had passed away in July 2023. He misled her by stating that he needed the death certificate
