Delhi elections: The BJP has found greater success in India’s Hindi heartland than in the southern states, but the real political dilemma for the party has always been Delhi. Over 1.5 crore voters have determined the fate of Delhi—the nation’s administrative epicenter—after the polls for 70 seats in the local assembly on February 5.
At the local level in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been a dominant force since 2015, capitalising on its strong local ties. Although the BJP surged to significant victories in Haryana and Maharashtra after somewhat disappointing Lok Sabha results, cracking Delhi’s code may just be its toughest challenge yet.
Initial predictions or the exit polls, as of Wednesday, give BJP a slight edge over the ruling AAP in the upcoming assembly elections, with Congress failing to show any significant gains. The Election Commission is set to announce the official results after counting on February 8. The exit polls — based on voter surveys post-election — often have a spotty track record, so the final results may differ.
