The order mandates that the Pentagon develop updated policies regarding the medical standards required for military service. It also addresses transgender individuals and “radical gender ideology,” stating that adopting a gender identity that was inconsistent with an individual’s sex denotes a conflict “with a soldier’s commitment” to a truthful, honourable and disciplined lifestyle.
This move follows an executive order from the Trump administration that overturned the Biden administration’s directive, which allowed transgender individuals to serve openly in the military.
Trump’s executive order calls for the United States military, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Defence to operate free from what the administration deems “discriminatory race or sex-based preferences”. This is part of a broader push by the Trump administration against affirmative action and DEI policies.
