Sinwar spent nearly two decades in custody whose 'high tolerance for suffering' vision shaped his role as Hamas leader.
On Thursday, Israel said troops in Gaza had killed Sinwar.
The secretive figure feared on both sides of the battle lines engineered the surprise October 7, 2023, attack into southern Israel, along with the even more shadowy Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas’ armed wing. Israel said that it killed Deif in a July airstrike in southern Gaza that killed more than 70 Palestinians.
Sinwar's tenure as Hamas leader started back in 2017, when he was elected head of Hamas’ political bureau in Gaza. Sinwar worked with Haniyeh to realign the group with Iran and its allies, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah. He also focused on building Hamas’ military power.
Before orchestrating the Oct. 7 raids Sinwar made no secret of his desire to strike his enemy hard. In a speech the year before, he vowed to send a flood of fighters and rockets to Israel, hinting at a war that would either unite the world to establish a Palestinian state on land Israel occupied in 1967, or leave the Jewish nation isolated on the global stage.
