“If someone is demonic, how can society remain humane? Society must have a humane approach towards our mothers and sisters,” Banerjee said at an event in Malda, expressing shock that the Sealdah court judgement stopped short of labelling the crime “rarest of rare.”
“It is a rarest of rare, sensitive, and heinous crime!” she said. “If a criminal escapes, he will commit crimes again and again. It is not our job to provide protection to criminals.”
The Sealdah court on Monday sentenced former civic police volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till death for the rape and murder of an on-duty postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year.
“In the RG Kar case, we said that we wanted capital punishment,” Banerjee said and referred to the Aparajita Bill that the West Bengal assembly to propose death sentence to such crimes. The bill is pending with the Centre.
