Delhi, 23-year-old Sonu, a food delivery rider, travels hundreds of kilometres daily with his two-year-old son, Sarthak, to secure a brighter future. Despite challenging conditions, Sonu's commitment to his son's future keeps him motivated as he works over 12 hours a day on his rented Yulu bike.
Originally from Bihar, Sonu took on family responsibilities early in life, working and attending school simultaneously. He came to Delhi in 2019 after marrying Nancy against their parents' wishes. Starting with a daily wage of Rs 200 as a labourer, Sonu then became a security guard before settling into his current job as a delivery rider for the past three years. Earlier this year, Nancy returned to her hometown, handing over young Sarthak to Sonu's care.
Sonu's daily routine is filled with challenges as he balances his role as a delivery rider and a father. Every kilometre covered on his Yulu bike brings him one step closer to his goal of ensuring his son has a better future.
«I just want my son to go to school soon, to study and pursue his dreams, to play with friends and be hopeful about a future where he gets a fair chance at life,» Sonu said.
Despite earning just Rs 500 after a full day of riding, Sonu finds motivation in the smiles of his son. Over a grueling 12-hour workday, he takes brief moments of respite through conversations with Sarthak, often resting on footpaths or parks. Sonu dreams of having a day off to spend quality time with his son, to play and enjoy each other's company.
A pressing concern for Sonu
