Ghaziabad Police on Wednesday told the Allahabad High Court that it has added a new charge against Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair.
The charge for “endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India” was made under relevant sections of the IT Act in their October 8 FIR. The statement came when the high court was hearing the journalist's plea seeking to quash the FIR against him over sharing a video clip of Narsinghanand.
Zubair’s lawyer Vrinda Grover said, “When the matter was being heard on Monday, the state (UP Police) kept saying that they had added more sections to the FIR. The court then asked them to put it on record. This morning, when they filed an affidavit, the Investigating Officer informed the court that they have added two new sections —152 and 66 of the IT act.”
Section 152 of the BNS is a non-bailable offence which relates to alleged acts endangering sovereignty unity and integrity of India.
Ghaziabad Police had filed an FIR on October 8 against Zubair based on a complaint lodged by Udita Tyagi, general secretary of Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati Trust, under BNS sections 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 228 (fabricating false evidence), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 356(3) (defamation) and 351(2) (punishment for criminal intimidation), following which Zubair had filed a writ petition before the Allahabad High Court.
