Motorola Mobility aims to be among the top three smartphone makers in India and globally in the next three years, growing sales four times over the same period, its president Sergio Buniac said. The handset maker is increasing its investments in India this year to double its sales and will also open its first camera lab within this quarter. “…we are investing a lot in the brand again, and you will see our investments increase significantly.
We know no Indian consumers are sophisticated, and our products are ready for search growth. India is an important market, and there is no way to achieve our global goals without succeeding in India,” the top executive told ET. He, however, maintained that the brand will remain focused on profitable growth.
Prashanth Mani, Executive Director, Asia Pacific, Motorola, said the company doubled its business last year. “In the last five quarters, we've seen every quarter sell-out growth, and this calendar year’s Q1, we have doubled the growth from a sell-in perspective. The market declined by 14%, but we were up 43% year-on-year,” he said.
Buniac, who took over as the president in 2018, said that Motorola has R&D investments in Brazil, China, the US and India. “We are now setting up our second camera lab outside our headquarters in Bengaluru in India. We are very committed to India in the longer term.” The top executive said the company is working with its Indian contract manufacturing partner, Padget Electronics, to build capacity to help fulfil the demand in India and the US.
