Chinese animated movie is creating ripples across the world. Called "Ne Zha 2", the movie has already shattered box office records in China to become the country's most successful film ever.
It has accumulated nearly $1.3 billion in mainland China within two weeks of its release. It is the first non-Hollywood film to surpass $1 billion in a single market. The movie is now set for a limited U.S. release starting Friday.
Based on the classic Chinese myth, «Ne Zha 2» follows a young deity who defies destiny, wielding supernatural powers to protect his people from formidable foes. This sequel builds on the 2019 original, which was a record-breaking success for Chinese animation.
Chinese audiences have embraced the film for its homegrown roots. «It's a purely Chinese animated film, deeply embedded in Chinese culture,» says independent film critic Nianyi Zhao. «Many support it as a way to promote domestic animation and share Chinese heritage with the world.»
Directed by Jiaozi (Yang Yu), «Ne Zha 2» premiered on January 29 during the Lunar New Year holiday, boosting China's cinema industry after a 2024 box office downturn. It has surpassed «The Battle of Lake Changjin» as China's highest-grossing film and could potentially overtake «Inside Out 2» as the world's top-earning animated film.
