Starbucks told to pay $50 million to delivery driver. Here’s what happened
Jury Orders Starbucks to Pay
Michael Garcia, 30, was working as a Postmates delivery driver when he went to a Los Angeles Starbucks on February 8, 2020. He picked up three «medicine ball» hot teas from the drive-thru. His lawyers said one of the drinks was not properly secured in the tray. When Garcia took the tray, the tea spilled into his lap.
The jury ruled in Garcia’s favor, awarding him $50 million. With added fees and interest, he will receive over $60 million. Before the trial, Starbucks had offered Garcia $3 million, which he declined. Later, Starbucks increased its offer to $30 million, but Garcia wanted the company to apologize and change its safety policies. Starbucks refused, and the case went to trial.
