The future of fueling looks promising, with renewable fuels and electric vehicles (EVs) among its options.
Hydrogen-powered vehicles
“Hydrogen is the fuel for the future and the most important way through which India can become a net exporter of energy,” said Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are emerging as a viable alternative to traditional gasoline and diesel engines.
The development of fuel cell technology is making strides, with companies exploring hydrogen as a clean and efficient energy source. Hydrogen fueling stations are being established, creating a supporting infrastructure for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
In the upcoming years, we can expect more advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology and an increase in hydrogen-powered vehicle options.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore, was approved by the Centre in January 2023 to make India a hub to produce green hydrogen worldwide. By 2030, the mission aims to support the growth of a production capacity of at least 5 MMT (million metric tonnes) annually, along with an additional 125 GW of renewable energy capacity added to the nation.
Biofuels and sustainable alternatives
The demand for sustainable and renewable fuels is on the rise.
Biofuels, derived from organic materials such as crops and waste, are gaining popularity as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Companies are investing in the research and development of advanced biofuels that have a lower carbon footprint.
