While some participants were heavily engaged in patriotic displays, most of the students appeared to join the bike rides purely for enjoyment and a sense of adventure amidst the economic uncertainty. The phenomenon which is dubbed as the ‘Night Riding Army’ eventually began in the month of June when a few students made an impulsive trip for dumplings and went quickly viral on social media, noted CNN.
As the craze spread more and more, the authorities of China eventually reversed their initial support while citing issues with traffic and public safety. CNN asserted that some universities even restricted student movements to prevent participation in these gatherings while the heavy crackdown reflects a broader concern over spontaneous youth mobilization in a politically sensitive environment.
