Since its inception in 1907, the Times Square Ball Drop has been a hallmark of New Year’s Eve celebrations. Taking place at the heart of Manhattan, the event features the descent of a massive, illuminated sphere adorned with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles and illuminated by over 32,000 LED lights.
At exactly 11:59 p.m. EST, the 12-foot-wide ball begins its 60-second descent from a specially designed flagpole atop One Times Square, heralding the arrival of the New Year. Originally conceived by Adolph Ochs, owner of The New York Times, the first ball was constructed from iron and wood and illuminated by 100 incandescent bulbs. Today, the modernised version weighs 11,875 pounds, embodying technological innovation while retaining the essence of hope and renewal.
