Neeta’s journey is one of resilience, strength, and unshakable determination. In an interview with the Humans of Bombay, she shard her story. Born into a household that never wanted her, she endured relentless abuse from her mother, while her father, lost in alcoholism, remained indifferent. At just six years old, tragedy struck when her mother died by suicide, and soon after, her father abandoned her. Left with no choice, Neeta’s maternal grandparents took her in, but their care was short-lived. By the age of 14, she was married off to a 22-year-old police officer—an abusive man who mirrored the same darkness she had grown up with.
Within two months of marriage, she was pregnant, and with no escape in sight, she surrendered to her fate. Over the years, she had three children and weathered every storm by her husband’s side, especially when financial hardships forced them to move into a slum. It was here that Neeta learned to ride a scooter—an act that would unknowingly set the foundation for her future. But what truly ignited the fire within her was her husband’s scornful words: “You can’t do anything.” Determined to prove him wrong, she took charge of her own destiny. She learned to drive vans and cars and soon turned her newfound skills into a business, ferrying schoolchildren daily.
