Social media was abuzz when a Singaporean influencer revealed that she had become a grandmother at the age of 34, as her 17-year-old son welcomed a child. Shirli Ling, known for her presence on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, shared the news through videos, detailing her experience and offering advice to her son.
In her Instagram posts, Ling candidly discussed the situation, stating that she became a grandmother when her son had a child at 17, much like when she became a parent at a similar age. She mentioned having four other children between the ages of 8 and 17.
“Actually, it was 34 when I became ahma (grandma). Good & bad! Depends on how you look at it and how you manage it,” Shirli Ling shared on Instagram.
Addressing the challenges, Ling emphasised the importance of support and guidance over scolding. She shared her approach of discussing options with her son when he revealed the pregnancy, drawing from her own experience of being a young parent.
In another video she shared, she wrote, “Things that already happen can't turn. Instead of scolding, I would rather advise and give them more support. We cannot choose good or naughty children to have. But we can guide our children to be better each and every day.”
While some social media users applauded Ling's handling of the situation, others expressed criticism, questioning her parenting decisions. One user argued for more decisive action to dissuade teenage pregnancies, while another found inspiration in Ling's story. However, there were those who felt
