Putin’s comments align with Trump’s long-standing assertion that, under his leadership, the Russia-Ukraine war would never have happened. But Putin also repeated Trump’s controversial claim that the 2020 US election was “stolen.”

Speaking to a Russian TV channel, Putin said that he agreed with Trump’s belief that the Ukraine war might never have happened had the 2020 election results not been disputed.

This was the first time Putin suggested that Trump’s presidency could have potentially avoided the war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Trump has said that under his leadership the war would have ended swiftly, even claiming that he could end the conflict in a single day. Trump had even given his special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, a 100-day deadline to find a solution to the crisis. To date, the new administration is yet to reveal a plan for peace.
