Darin Gaub noted that the helicopter crew was using night vision goggles which thus limited their field of vision to about 40 degrees while potentially hindering their ability to see the approaching aircraft, reported New York Post. Lt. Col. Darin Gaub also speculates that the helicopter pilot might have misidentified another plane and failed to notice the American Airlines Flight 5342 before the collision.
Adding onto that, he also pointed out that the bright city lights below could have caused immense confusion between aircraft lights and streetlights, asserted New York Post.
