Lorna Green, the woman responsible for setting fire to Wyoming's only full-service abortion clinic, pay almost $300,000 in restitution, meeting the entirety of the prosecution's request.
Currently serving a five-year prison sentence for the 2022 incident at Wellspring Health Access in Casper, Green's actions caused substantial damage, delaying the clinic's opening for almost a year. Recently operational since April, Wellspring stands as Wyoming's sole abortion clinic, following the closure of a pill abortion facility in Jackson due to escalating costs.
In a ruling by U.S. District Judge Alan Johnson, Green, aged 22, has been directed to reimburse approximately $298,000, including $240,000 to the clinic's insurer, Nationwide General Insurance Company. Additionally, she is obligated to pay $33,500 to the building's owner, Christine Lichtenfels, and $24,500 to Julie Burkhart, the clinic's founder and president. Burkhart expressed contentment with the restitution, highlighting the emotional and financial challenges the arson posed.
Burkhart remarked, «Not only did we have the emotional struggle and that trauma from the arson, but also it was quite challenging for us financially. So I’m glad this is the final piece and it has been put to rest.»
Green, who has conveyed remorse for her actions citing anxiety and nightmares concerning the clinic, had no prior history of anti-abortion sentiments on social media. Despite her regrets, she admitted to the crime and accepted responsibility. After pleading guilty to arson in June and receiving the minimum sentence in September, she expressed anticipation for a peaceful life post-incarceration.
