Target Freedom Freedom on Mondays
weekend freedom through a continuous onslaught of emails and text messages? At work, we feel like slaves to continuous deadlines and targets, and feel confined by day-to-day problems and workfires, which inevitably steal our available time. What are freedom and slavery? Despite living as slaves under imperial governments, Gandhi and Mandela were free humans. They did what they liked, thought what they wanted, and determined their priorities as they preferred. Even in prison, they expressed themselves in the context of their value systems, ignoring iron bars that locked their physical beings. Indian spirituality differentiates among mind, intellect and soul as three separate components of our being. Our mind is a centre of emotions, intellect is a place for logic and reasoning, and soul is our real self. In Bhagwad Gita, chapter 2.55, Krishn says that when one thoroughly casts off cravings of mind and is satisfied in the Self, he has a stable mind, Stithaprajna. Krishn prescribes meditation to achieve this stable mind.

Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU), more than 100 people gathered at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Sunday to advocate for a healthy work-life balance in the IT sector. Expressing disappointment over the turnout, KITU advisor Vasanthraj said that, given Bengaluru's status as a tech hub, at least 6,000 people should have participated to make their collective voice heard. «The hard reality is that IT industry captains are minting profits through the dollar exchange rate but end up squeezing workers. In the last three decades, the IT industry should have become an IT product giant. But despite moving up a few steps in the value chain, it remains a service industry,» said Vasanthraj. KITU member Ram said the protest was organised to counter recent remarks by Infosys Chairman Emeritus Narayana Murthy and L&T Chairman and Managing Director S N Subrahmanyan, who have blamed workers for the sector's failure to move up the value chain.

As India grapples with unusually high temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an early and intense summer this year, with prolonged heatwaves. The country recently saw its warmest February since 1901, along with one of the driest winters in recent history, which has raised concerns about the ongoing climate crisis. Human-caused climate change is leading to a «new normal» of warmer winters and shorter springs. However, scientists emphasize that annual weather patterns, known as «year-to-year variability,» still play a crucial role in influencing seasonal conditions.
