Simultaneous e-auctions for other mining sites were going on and there was technical glitch: SC
Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the Jindal Steel & Power Ltd’s (JSPL) appeal seeking a direction to the coal ministry to refrain from taking further steps for development of the Chhendipada coal mine in Odisha. Rungta Sons, which had emerged as the highest bidder in an e-auction of commercial coal mines on February 28, was granted the Odisha coal block. Having lost the Chhendipada (revised) coal block to Rungta Sons, a subsidiary of Jharkhand-based Rungta Mines, JSPL alleged that it was wrongly and unfairly prevented from submitting its next higher bid due to glitches on the MSTC portal. A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud upheld the Delhi High Court’s July 25 decision that rejected JSPL’s petition for quashing of the grant of the Odisha coal block to Rungta Sons. Counsel Gauri Rasgotra, appearing for JSPL, claimed that technical glitches on the MSTC portal during the e-auction on February 27 had prevented it from submitting a higher bid for the mine that has 513 million tonnes of geological reserves.

Netherlands cause another big World Cup upset, stun South Africa by 38 runs
Put in to bat in challenging conditions after the rain reduced the contest to 43 over a side, the Netherlands found themselves reeling at 140 for seven before their captain Scott Edwards staged a remarkable recovery with an unbeaten 78 off 69 balls to take his side to a fighting 245 for eight. With the pitch offering variable bounce and some turn, the Netherlands sniffed an opportunity against a formidable South African batting unit which crumbled under pressure to be all out for 207 in 42.5 overs, handing the Dutch their first World Cup win against a Test playing nation. Until Tuesday, the Netherlands had only beaten fellow associate nations Namibia and Scotland in their World Cup history, having made their debut back in 1996. The surprise outcome came 48 hours after Afghanistan shocked defending champions England in Delhi, adding to the unpredictability of the 10 team competition. The Netherlands, who qualified for the their first World Cup since 2011 by finishing second in the Qualifier earlier this year, have shown significant improvement over the years. The Dutch had humbled the Proteas in T20 World Cup 11 months ago and at the scenic Dharamsala on Tuesday, they recorded another famous win over them in a less unpredictable format. At the start of the tournament, Bas de Leede, one of the few full-time cricketers in the team, had expressed delight at cricket being shown live on TV back home after four years.

How the onion rolls: The politics and economy of India's kitchen staple
Reserve Bank of India’s governor Shaktikanta Das during the bi-monthly MPC meeting on October 6 said that onion production needs to be “watched closely.” Onions aren't the main dish in Indian kitchens but onions do add depth and complexity to dishes, playing the role of a supporting actor that steals the show. But it’s not the first time onions and politics have their paths crossed in India. In Indian politics, onions have often been a barometer of public sentiment, capable of making or breaking governments. The pungent politics of onions Onions have deep-fried governments before.
