NRI CEO doubles down on 14-hr-a-day work schedule, says smart people don’t need work-life balance
Daksh Gupta, the 23-year-old Indian-origin CEO of AI startup Greptile, has reignited debate over work-life balance following his controversial remarks on long working hours. In a recent interview with NBC Bay Area, Gupta defended his company's demanding culture, likening it to a «rocket launch» that requires exceptional effort and commitment. «Success is a mix of hard work and luck,» Gupta explained. «When two smart teams tackle the same problem, the one that works harder and has better luck usually wins. While luck is uncontrollable, the time you invest is not.» Gupta acknowledged that such a high-pressure work environment isn't suitable for everyone and noted that many successful companies prioritize work-life balance. «If you value work-life balance, that's great. Plenty of places operate that way and thrive,» he added.

Pernod Ricard internal probe reveals top bosses in India violated law in deals with Delhi retailers
Pernod Ricard concluded that top executives at its India business violated the law by colluding with alcohol retailers in New Delhi, according to a document seen by Reuters, even as the French giant's representatives denied wrongdoing in court and publicly. PRI told Reuters in January and February 2023 that it «strongly» denies the Enforcement Directorate allegations, calling them «factually incorrect.» As recently as Sept. 4, lawyers for Benoy Babu, a PRI executive named in Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas's report, asked the Delhi High Court to quash the case against him. They said allegations against Babu, who was briefly jailed pending trial last year, were «false and baseless», and authorities were relying on «hearsay evidence». The court has yet to rule on Babu's non-public filing, which was seen by Reuters. He didn't respond to questions from the news agency.

Normalcy returns to Rajya Sabha as opposition chooses debate over disruption
Rajya Sabha returned to regular work with the opposition abandoning its plan of disrupting proceedings to press for its demands and taking on the government through debates on burning issues. The upper house saw the smooth conduct of zero hour, question hour and passage of two bills on Tuesday. When the house assembled for the day, chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced that he has received a “record” number of 42 notices for suspension of listed business to discuss an important issue under Rule 267. He said that eight subjects have been mentioned in these notices, namely, the law and order situation in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh; the law and order situation in Manipur; special category status to Odisha; the damage caused by Fengal cyclone in Tamil Nadu; the Adani bribery issue; the law and order situation in Delhi; the displacement of people in Wayanad due to landslide; and the attack on minorities in Bangladesh. Dhankhar dismissed the notices and proceeded with the zero hour with the opposition conceding after a feeble protest. The smooth functioning of the House facilitated the raising of different issues by the opposition, which is reportedly divided on what matter should be given precedence during protests.

Cyber scams soar by 158% in 2024, Rs 452 cr stolen from accounts: Delhi Police
cyber scams by June, up from Rs 175 crore during the same period in 2023. Investigators disclosed that criminals are using more advanced methods to avoid detection and launder stolen funds. A prevalent tactic involves spreading the stolen money across multiple digital wallets, complicating efforts by law enforcement to trace the funds' origin. This swift distribution prevents authorities from targeting the original account from which the money was transferred. To further complicate matters, the criminals often withdraw the funds through multiple ATMs, further obscuring the money trail. Additionally, they exploit the bank accounts of vulnerable individuals, such as those living in poverty or with limi ted financial literacy. By offering small sums of money, they acquire access to these accounts and use them as conduits for transferring the stolen funds. “Even if the investigators follow the money trail and reach the account holder, they will never get to know who the real mastermind of the scam is. The person who allowed the use of his or her bank account get arrested,” one investigator said.
