Vi's Rs 18,000-cr fundraise will increase competition, but it's good for Indian telecom, says Airtel's Gopal Vittal
Bharti Airtel managing director Gopal Vittal said rival Vodafone Idea’s recent Rs 18,000 crore capital raise will increase competition but is good for India’s telecom sector, which requires three strong players. He added that the telecom industry urgently needs substantial tariff repair, ideally via multiple rounds of price hikes to boost average revenue per user (ARPU) to the Rs 300 level as the current returns are way too low. Vittal did not specifically comment on when Airtel would start charging a premium for its 5G services, but conceded that the current high levels of data consumption — in the present 5G at 4G rates scenario — would automatically decline once 5G services are priced in. Airtel’s 5G user base was at 72 million in the quarter ended March 2024, and the telco is adding around 2-2.5 million 5G users a month amid rising device shipments, he added.

India's defence capabilities boosted under Modi government, relying on imports only for immediate needs: NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat
defence capabilities over the past decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, according to NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat. Speaking to PTI, Saraswat, a former chief of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), highlighted that the country now relies on arms imports only for immediate military needs. Strengthened Indigenous Defence Manufacturing Saraswat noted that currently, 60% of India's arms and ammunition are domestically produced, reflecting a substantial increase in indigenous manufacturing. He mentioned that major corporate entities like the Adani Group, Tata Group, and L&T are now manufacturing radar systems and guns within the country, further bolstering India's self-reliance in defence production.

Mamata Banerjee going soft on infiltration, pursuing appeasement politics, says BJP chief J P Nadda
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of compromising on the issue of infiltration and appeasing minorities, BJP chief J P Nadda on Wednesday said during the decade-long reign of the TMC in the state, one scandal after another has plagued West Bengal. Speaking at an election rally in support of the party's Purulia candidate Jyotirmoy Mahato, Nadda said while the fragmented INDIA bloc parties were rooting for a 'majboor' (weak) government at the Centre to fulfill their selfish motives, people of West Bengal have already made their choice clear for a 'majboot' (strong) government. Nadda also accused Banerjee of converting Bengal into a safe haven for terrorists. «Mamata Didi's government is going soft on the issue of infiltration besides pursuing the policy of minority appeasement,» Nadda said.
