The cyclist who uncorked a historic victory at the Tour de France
TURIN, Italy—Over more than 120 years of history, the Tour de France had seen stage winners emerge from 33 different countries. The list included historic cycling powerhouses like France and Belgium, more recent talent hubs such as Denmark and Slovenia, and even a couple that came completely out of nowhere, like Latvia. But the roll call of winners at cycling’s biggest bike race expanded a little Monday when a 24-year-old named Biniam Girmay crossed the line first to become the first Eritrean to take a stage here.

Make no mistake, Russia failing in this war: US President Joe Biden
Joe Biden on Tuesday announced a historic donation of air-defence equipment for Ukraine and said Russia is failing in this war. Welcoming leaders of NATO member countries for the historic summit on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, Biden said the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Italy will provide Ukraine with the equipment for five additional strategic air-defence systems. In the coming months, the US and its partners intend to provide Ukraine with dozens of additional tactical air-defence systems, he said, adding that the US will make sure that when «we export critical air-defence interceptors, Ukraine goes to the front of the line». «They will get this assistance before anyone else gets it. All told, Ukraine will receive hundreds of additional interceptors over the next year, helping protect Ukrainian cities against Russian missile and Ukrainian troops facing air attacks on their front lines,» Biden said.

Joe Biden says he 'nearly fell asleep' during debate after world travel
Joe Biden on Tuesday acknowledged his performance during last Thursday's presidential debate wasn't his best, but blamed it on jet lag after two overseas trips earlier in June. Biden has faced mounting questions about his 2024 reelection bid after last week's shaky debate performance, with one House of Representatives fellow Democrat on Tuesday publicly calling on him to withdraw from the race. Speaking at a campaign event in McLean, Virginia, on Tuesday evening, Biden admitted the debate against former President Donald Trump, his Republican rival, did not go well.

Ukraine’s European allies are either broke, small or irresolute
The perfect European, or so the sarcastic quip goes, should drive like a Frenchman, cook like the Dutch, be as organised as the Greeks and as humorous as a German. A variant of the joke might haunt those trying to devise the perfect ally for Ukraine as it fends off Russian aggression. Imagine a country the size of Latvia, with the budget problems of the hard-up Italians, the willingness to pitch in of Kremlin-loving Hungarians and the arms industry of neutral Ireland.

England’s soccer team has landed on a plan for Euro glory. It’s called plan B.
DÜSSELDORF , GERMANY : Three weeks into its campaign at this European Championship, England’s national soccer team has come to a jarring realization: Whatever approach it had designed here wasn’t working. The Three Lions have barely scored, have created next to no chances, and have a nasty tendency to keep falling behind. And yet, as heavyweights such as Germany, Italy, and Portugal all went home, England has stuck around.

Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic gets free pass to Wimbledon semi-finals as Rybakina cruises
Novak Djokovic progressed to a record-equalling 13th Wimbledon semi-final without hitting a ball on Wednesday after Alex de Minaur pulled out injured as former champion Elena Rybakina eased through. Australian ninth seed De Minaur, 25, announced shortly after midday at the All England Club that he was «devastated to pull out due to a hip injury». It means Djokovic has now equalled Roger Federer's men's record of 13 semi-final appearances at Wimbledon as he closes on the Swiss great's mark of eight singles titles.

Biden attributes foreign travel and lack of rest as he nearly ‘fell asleep’ during the US Presidential Debate
Joe Biden defended his performance in the first US Presidential Debate and said that he had nearly fell asleep after undertaking foreign trips. He said that he needed some rest before the debate but could not afford to take it. The 81-year-old president faces opposition from his own party members who have asked him to step down in view of his disastrous performance in the debate. What is not known is that the president had 13 days to take rest after his visit to Italy to attend the G-7 summit.

Interviews
Joe Biden's lapses are said to be increasingly common and worrisome
Joe Biden's politically devastating performance on the debate stage in Atlanta, several current and former officials and others who encountered him behind closed doors noticed that he increasingly appeared confused or listless, or would lose the thread of conversations. Like many people his age, Biden, 81, has long experienced instances in which he mangled a sentence, forgot a name or mixed up a few facts, even though he could be sharp and engaged most of the time. But in interviews, people in the room with him more recently said that the lapses seemed to be growing more frequent, more pronounced and more worrisome. The uncomfortable occurrences were not predictable, but seemed more likely when he was in a large crowd or tired after a particularly bruising schedule. In the 23 days leading up to the debate against former President Donald Trump, Biden jetted across the Atlantic Ocean twice for meetings with foreign leaders and then flew from Italy to California for a splashy fundraiser, maintaining a grueling pace that exhausted even much younger aides.
