Earlier this month, Hong Kong's Center for Food Safety (CFS) said that samples of several kinds of pre-packaged spice-mix products of two Indian brands MDH and Everest were found to contain a pesticide ethylene oxide. The CFS asked consumers not to buy and traders not to sell MDH's Madras Curry Powder (spice blend for Madras curry), Everest Fish Curry Masala, MDH Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and MDH Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder. In a statement, MDH said it has not received any communications from Hong Kong and Singapore food safety regulators.

smuggling, security officials have recovered gold of over 2 kgs from two airline passengers. In the first instance, officers from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Tiruchirappalli airport in Tamil Nadu seized 977 grams of 24K gold valued at Rs 70.58 lakh from a passenger who had come from Dubai. Authorities reported that the gold was hidden in three packets with 1081 grams of paste-like material inside the passenger's rectum. The passenger was traveling from Dubai to Trichy on the Air India Express. They have been detained, and additional investigation is currently in progress.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is gathering information on products of Indian spice makers MDH and Everest after Hong Kong halted sales of some of their products for allegedly containing high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide. «The FDA is aware of the reports and is gathering additional information about the situation,» an FDA spokesperson told Reuters on Friday. Hong Kong this month suspended sales of three MDH spice blends and an Everest spice mix for fish curries. Singapore ordered a recall of the Everest spice mix, saying it contains high levels of ethylene oxide, which is unfit for human consumption and a cancer risk with long exposure.
