RS witnesses uproarious scenes as BJP MP raises 'attacks' on India's interests from abroad
Rajya Sabha on Thursday witnessed uproarious scenes in the morning when BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged attacks by foreign forces on India's national interests and demanded a thorough probe besides asking all MPs to discuss the serious issue. Speaking on 'Concerns over Suspicious and Conspicuous Attacks on National Interest from Abroad' during Zero Hour, Trivedi cited instances during the past three years wherein issues concerning India were raised by international entities just before or during Parliament sessions. He cited examples of the Hindenburg report, Covid vaccine report and one on Indian farmers, a BBC documentary, Pegasus issue and a video on violence against women in Manipur during the past three years. He also cited the recent report on the indictment of an Indian business house by a US attorney just ahead of the Winter Session. «Ever since India is emerging as a strategic, economic and diplomatic power, it has been seen that in the last three years there have been attempts to attack India's established systems and interests on economic and social fronts through activities from abroad,» he said.

Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. China is the handmaiden to the globe’s energy transition—and will continue to be so once an anti-transition president occupies the White House again next month. As if to advertise that, Beijing announced that, in response to US export controls on advanced chips, it was banning exports to the US of several critical minerals and tightening restrictions on sales of another, graphite.

After Hunter, Biden mulls 'preemptive pardons' for Anthony Fauci, Liz Cheney amid fears of Trump-led prosecutions
recently issued a «full and unconditional» pardon to his son Hunter Biden for gun crime and tax convictions, a decision that was widely criticised by Republicans and Democrats alike. Biden, who earlier said he would not interfere with the proceedings, said his son was “unfairly prosecuted" by political opponents. This has brought renewed attention to the US Constitution's provision granting the president the authority to offer clemency, a power wielded by every president since George Washington. Biden's senior aides in the White House are now actively considering whether to issue 'preemptive pardons' to certain current and former public officials in the government as fears grow over the possibility of politically motivated prosecutions under Donald Trump’s return to the presidency.

Banking reforms need to get a lot more ambitious for the economy’s sake
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. The 19 amendments to banking laws that were passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday remove various niggles in extant provisions, straighten out some others and make life easier for bank customers, especially a tweak that allows four nominees per account. Under the present system of a single nominee, couples tend to nominate each other; should they both pass away together, say, in a road accident, their heirs would have a tough time accessing their inheritance.

OpenAI chief 'believes' Musk will not abuse government power
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed confidence Wednesday that Elon Musk would not use his proximity to Donald Trump to harm business rivals, calling such actions «profoundly un-American.» Speaking at the New York Times DealBook conference, Altman addressed concerns about Musk's announced role heading a new Department of Government Efficiency in the incoming Donald Trump administration, and whether he might use it to favor his own companies. «I may turn out to be wrong, but I believe pretty strongly that Elon will do the right thing,» Altman said. «It would be profoundly un-American to use political power to hurt your competitors and advantage your own businesses.»

Euro edges higher, but off peaks after French no-confidence vote; US dollar flat
euro rose marginally against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, but came off session highs, after a widely expected collapse of the French government following a no-confidence vote by opposition lawmakers. The greenback, on the other hand, was little changed overall, as the December interest rate cut chances remained on track amid signs that the American economy was slowing.
