Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Tuesday amid noisy protests by opposition members seeking to ask questions on the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Maha Kumbh. The proceedings were earlier adjourned till 1 pm, shortly after Modi made his statement and the opposition members rose in their seats in protest, with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi apparently urging Speaker Om Birla to allow the opposition members to speak. As many as 30 pilgrims were killed and 60 injured in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh on January 29.

Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday said the Centre has failed to bring peace at gunpoint in Manipur and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and listen to the apprehensions and concerns of the people. Initiating a discussion on the supplementary demands for grants, excess grants and the Manipur budget, he asserted that peace cannot be restored in the northeastern state at the barrel of gun and only a political solution was the way out. Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, said the Manipur budget should have been discussed in the state assembly, but President's Rule has been imposed in the state. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should apprise the House about the rationale for imposition of President's Rule in the state. «What is the state of Vidhan Sabha in the state — is it dissolved or in suspended animation,» the Congress leader sought to know. BJP members, including Nishikant Dubey, objected to Gogoi's extensive reference to the situation in Manipur and cited rules to point out that the Congress leader should stick to the demands for grants and the state budget.

Finance Ministry on Monday briefed the members of a Select Committee of Lok Sabha on various aspects of the Income Tax Bill as the panel headed by BJP MP Baijayant 'Jay' Panda held its first meeting. Sources said the finance secretary told the parliamentarians that the Bill will simplify the existing Act, enacted over six decades back, and make it more user-friendly.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge submitted a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla alleging «physical assault» by other Bharatiya Janata Party MPs, other party MPs also told that party leader Rahul Gandhi had been blocked from entering Parliament, following which a scuffle broke out between the two parties. This comes amidst INDIA bloc and NDA leaders staging parallel protests at the Parliament premises regarding the remarks of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on B R Ambedkar. During the scuffle, two BJP MPs, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput were injured. Both MPs were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and are being treated for their injuries.

The Lok Sabha agenda said the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, popularly being referred to as the Bill on «one nation, one election», will be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Post the introduction, Meghwal will request Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the Bill to a Joint Committee of Parliament for wider consultations. The joint panel will be constituted on a pro-rata basis, based on the strength of MPs of various parties.

Manickam Tagore on Friday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and urged him to expunge the remarks made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over Congress leaders in the Lower House, terming them «derogatory» and «disparaging.» The Congress MP said that the remarks made by Nishikant Dubey during Zero Hour on December 12 were utterly 'disparaging and derogatory.' He claimed that the content of almost the entire matter raised by Dubey was unacceptable and also in gross violation of the provisions of Rule 352 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak during Tuesday's function in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan to mark the 75th anniversary of the Constituent Assembly's adoption of the Constitution. «We are writing in the context of the function being held tomorrow (Tuesday) in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India. We understand that the function will be addressed by the president, vice-president and the prime minister of India,» the letter signed by leaders of various parties said. «We believe that in the best traditions and interests of Parliamentary democracy, the Leaders of Opposition (LoPs) in both Houses should also be given an opportunity to speak on this historic occasion,» it added.

There were people of different ideologies in the Constituent Assembly, and there were people of different religions too, but the Constituent Assembly had meaningful and positive discussions, he added. Differences can exist but people must come together to work for the country, Birla said, adding that differences are the strength of democracy. «On Constitution Day, we need to take inspiration from the debates and discussions of the Constituent Assembly. There were people of different ideologies in the Constituent Assembly, and there were people of different religions too, but the Constituent Assembly had meaningful and positive discussions. The differences were there then also as it is the strength of democracy. We should take inspiration from our traditions and customs so that we can have good discussions in our respective Houses. The differences can exist, but we must come together to work for the country. Ideologies and expression can differ, but the country is always first (supreme),» Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla told ANI.

Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Girish Chandra Murmu on Saturday urged officers to think out of the box, experiment with new techniques, and adapt to the changing technological and governance environment. With the increasing use of AI and emerging technologies to provide services, he said there are numerous risks, ranging from privacy breaches and algorithmic biases to social exclusion. "...as an organisation, we are deeply cognisant of these developments and are engaging closely with emerging technological trends for enhancing the effectiveness of auditing and accounting practices in such a landscape," he said at the 4th Audit Diwas celebrations here.

Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) members from the Opposition will boycott the meetings starting from November 9. Banerjee was recently suspended for a day following his altercation during a JPC meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Meanwhile, seven Opposition lawmakers on Monday threatened to disassociate themselves from the JPC on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

For half an hour, a huge number of devotees thronged the ISKCON Temple on the occasion of the Janmashtami festival. When the crowd increased, the number of security forces also increased. All senior officers are present on the spot. The program is going on in a very orderly manner. So far, no injuries have been reported,» SSP Mishra told reporters on Monday. On the occasion of the Janmashtami festival, devotees flocked to temples across the country to seek Lord Krishna's blessing on his birth anniversary, with political leaders like Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel paying their obeisance.

Lok Sabha on Thursday while Opposition parties have demanded that it should be sent to a Parliamentary panel for further scrutiny. In the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Lok Sabha, chaired by Speaker Om Birla, the government informed that the bill is likely to be introduced on Thursday. In the meeting, leaders from the Congress, NCP-SCP, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress strongly opposed the bill introduction and said it should be referred to a Parliamentary committee.

Jalpaiguri: Secretary of the North Bengal Exporters Association, Brij Kishore Prasad, stated on Tuesday that the ongoing protests in Bangladesh have led to significant losses for Indian exporters. According to Prasad, the closure of the border has resulted in vehicles being stranded and shipments already dispatched being unable to be unloaded. He added that with a curfew in place and banks closed, payments for shipped goods are not being received.
