We need to create more heroes to make India a sports superpower: Vijender Singh
Vijender Singh feels India needs more heroes beyond cricket to inspire the future generations if the country wants to become a sports superpower by 2047. These heroes, he believes, will also drive a cultural change, encouraging more young Indians to pursue sports as a profession.

France's train network paralysed by coordinated attacks just before Olympics opening ceremony; Here's what we know
Paris Olympics kicked off, a series of coordinated vandalism acts severely disrupted France's high-speed rail network. The incidents, which involved deliberate arson attacks, specifically targeted essential installations on major rail lines connecting Paris with cities such as Lille, Bordeaux, and Strasbourg. The disruption has caused significant delays and cancellations of train services, greatly affecting passengers and athletes traveling for the international event. In response, SNCF, the state-owned railway operator, has urged travelers to postpone their journeys until further notice.

The secret Russians at the Paris Olympics
PARIS—As the Summer Games approached in Paris and the war raged on in Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee was confronted with a thorny political question: what to do about Russian athletes? Officially, Russia is banned from sending a team under its name and flag for the fourth consecutive Olympics. This time, however, the reason isn’t related to the country’s epic state-sponsored doping scandal, but rather Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. As it did during all of the previous bans since 2014, the IOC created a pathway for athletes from Russia—and in this case Belarus—to compete, but not under their country’s flag or colors.

Paris Olympics hosts 10,500 athletes—ringed by 77,000 security personnel
PARIS—France is transforming its capital city into an open-air fortress, rolling out the largest peacetime security operation in the country’s history to protect athletes, residents and more than 10 million visitors during the Olympic Games. Officials say as many as 45,000 police, 10,000 soldiers and 22,000 private security guards will keep watch at the Paris Olympics, which begins Wednesday and spans the heart of the city—on streets, at landmarks and in the waters of the Seine River. Place de la Concorde, the city’s largest public square, is set up for BMX bike races, skateboarding and breakdancing, a French addition to the Games.

Paris: Olympics host has a lot riding on keeping 10,500 athletes and millions of visitors safe
Paris Olympics boldly declared that France’s capital would be “the safest place in the world” when the Games open this Friday. Tony Estanguet’s confident forecast looks less far-fetched now with squadrons of police patrolling Paris’ streets, fighter jets and soldiers primed to scramble, and imposing metal-fence security barriers erected like an iron curtain on both sides of the River Seine that will star in the opening show. France’s vast police and military operation is in large part because the July 26-Aug. 11 Games face unprecedented security challenges. The city has repeatedly suffered deadly extremist attacks and international tensions are high because of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

Olympic success or failure can hinge on the snap of a finger, a tiny wobble or even a gust of wind
Mike Conley spent most of the 1980s ranked among the top triple jumpers in the world. So, heading into the US Olympic trials in ’88, there was very little thought given to the idea he wouldn’t finish in the top three and make the trip to Seoul. In a sport embedded inside an Olympic world where medals can be won and careers can be made by the most minuscule of fractions — of seconds or centimeters — what toppled Conley’s hopes had nothing to do with a measuring tape. It was a pair of baggy shorts, the likes of which he had never worn in a track meet before, that did him in. Conley recalls video replays that showed the breeze that was kicked up by the vented flaps on the sides of his shorts created a barely perceptible mark in the sand nearly a foot behind where he landed.

Overcoming hurdles: In life, on track
Jyothi Yarraji is not new to expectations, disappointments, and glory — the constant circle of an athlete’s life. Born on August 28, 1999, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to parents with very limited means — father a security guard and mother a domestic help — she was never short on determination. Taking care of her family “on her own” was the biggest motivation. She had to deal with injuries and frustrations too, quite early in her career. She was denied 100m hurdles national record on two occasions.

24 Service personnel among 117 Indian athletes taking part in Paris 2024 Olympics
Armed Forces personnel are among the 117 Indian athletes who are all set to make the nation proud at the Paris Olympics, beginning July 26 this year. Among these 24 athletes, 22 are men, including star javelin thrower and Subedar Neeraj Chopra, and two are women, which marks the maiden participation of female service athletes at the Olympics, as per a press release from the Union Ministry of Defence. Neeraj, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and World Athletics Championship gold medalist, will again vie for top honours as his participation in the Paris Olympics comes on the back of exceptional performances that earned him a gold medal each at the 2023 Asian Games, 2023 World Athletics Championships and 2024 Paavo Nurmi Games.

Brands run, lift, reach for Olympic stars
brands have signed sponsorship or partnership deals for the Paris Olympics, showing unprecedented interest in non-cricket sportspersons, with many keen to soft-block likely medallists. Radico Khaitan, Puma, Dream Sports, Amul, JSW Group and Adani Group are some major names associated with the Indian contingent bound for Paris. «This is the first time we are doing such an association… sports in India is no longer just about cricket,» said Abhishek Khaitan, MD of spirits brand Radico Khaitan. «We have signed up as official spirits partner for India House, to cater to global tourists.» India House, being set up by Reliance Foundation and the Indian Olympic Association in Paris, has been envisaged as a cultural centre. The long road to Olympic equality for women
Next week’s Summer Olympics in Paris will be the first in which equal numbers of female and male athletes participate. The milestone is owed in large part to an International Olympic Committee working group started in 2018 that established specific benchmarks for achieving gender parity.
