Eutelsat OneWeb, Jio seek provisional satellite spectrum to be future-ready
Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio are believed to have called on communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to consider early provisional allocation of satellite spectrum for around six months so that companies that have the requisite permissions can quickly launch broadband-from-space services commercially in India. Companies need a GMPCS (global mobile personal communications by satellite services) license and necessary regulatory approvals from Indian National Space Promotion & Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) before launching commercial satcom services in India, a nascent market but with a lot of potential, say experts. The issue came up during a meeting with key industry stakeholders of the satcoms ecosystem that was chaired by Scindia on Monday, two people aware of the matter said.

Hybrids face uphill drive to sops in Uttar Pradesh; Only FAME II-certified vehicles to benefit from state scheme
hybrid vehicles in Uttar Pradesh may not be able to immediately take advantage of benefits under a promotional scheme that was announced July 5. The state transport authority has informed manufacturers in a July 9 letter that the benefits under the state scheme would apply to vehicles certified under the central government’s flagship Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME II) incentive programme. ET has seen the letter. Senior industry executives said the state is considering linking incentives on hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) to guidelines outlined in FAME II. Some car makers had raised objections to the incentives for hybrids announced by Uttar Pradesh as they feel any state policies not aligned with those of the Centre will be ad hoc and create confusion. “The state transport authority is unlikely to give a blanket exemption and is considering specifying a price cap incentivising only certain categories of strong hybrids,” a person aware of the discussions told ET. “The eligibility criteria for these vehicles and the guidelines for implementation are likely to be linked to FAME II.”

Life lessons from Yog
yoga pose that literally translates as seated forward bend. It involves being seated with your legs straight in front of you, raising your hands, exhaling and bending forward to touch your feet. If you are proficient, your nose will touch your knees; if not, you gaze at your toes. And you notice something you have always taken for granted — the sheer difference in the size and length of each toe. The big toe, weight-bearing, carries a significant load of a person's body weight, helps grip the ground, gives us balance, and is responsible for 80-85% of our stability. It plays a critically important role. How many of us are even aware of this? We look at it daily and take it for granted as we do for so much of our body. Worse, we also tend to take for granted so many relationships that are important for our emotional well-being. The result is that, paradoxically, we neglect our near and dear ones the most. We tend to be rude to them while we are at our polite Sunday best with rank strangers. We ignore our loved ones and take their presence and support for granted.

Third Eye: Trying to turn the tables, headlines to get attention, and skydiving to boost tourism
Trying to turn the tables: The Mahayuti (grand alliance) was in disarray after the Lok Sabha fiasco, but the state government, eyeing the assembly polls, has rolled out various initiatives, including free power to farmers and Rs 1500 to women each month. In the assembly, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde mocked the opposition by saying they would be constructing additional hospitals in the state to treat all the opposition leaders for their «stomach ache» caused by all the new programmes they had implemented. Headlines to get attention Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP, is always surrounded by reporters because he frequently provides bytes and statements that create headlines. Raut is aware of this, which is why, on Friday, when he saw the BJP's Chandrakant Patil at the assembly premises, he drew Patil towards him and suggested that the two come together again. Raut's statements were a brilliant word play for the media, which tried to figure out whether Raut was advocating that the BJP and UBT reunite again. Raut later stated, while speaking to the media, that nothing should be interpreted from his statements.

India will become third largest economy soon: PM Modi
India will soon become the third largest economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday. He was speaking after inaugurating INS Towers, the Indian Newspaper Society's secretariat in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex. Modi also spoke on how India has become the leader in digital payments. «There was a time when some politicians used to say that digital transactions were not for India. They had a preconceived notion that modern technology can't work in this country,» Modi said. «However, the world is witnessing the capabilities of the people of the country. Today, India is creating new records in digital transactions. Due to India's UPI and modern digital public infrastructure, the ease of living of people has improved, and it has become easier for them to send money across countries,» he said.

TRAI may offer some leeway on service quality rules to telcos
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is likely to relax some of the parameters in the proposed quality of service (QoS) rules that have been termed too stringent to meet by the industry. The regulator though has stressed that telecom operators must improve service quality, especially on the back of the recent tariff hikes. «The telcos have submitted their comments on the draft regulations during the consultation process. We are aware of the challenges and the final rules would likely address issues raised by the telcos,» a senior official said, asking not to be named. J-K political parties oppose Centre's move to give more powers to Lt Guv
Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday voiced their strong opposition to the Centre's move to vest more powers in the Union Territory's Lieutenant Governor for taking decisions on matters related to police and all-India service officers. While main regional outfits — the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) — said the decision would «disempower» the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress termed it as the «murder of democracy» and the Apni Party urged all parties to shun differences and unitedly protest against the move. NC Vice President Omar Abdullah said the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve better than a «powerless, rubber stamp» chief minister who will have to beg the Lieutenant Governor to get a peon appointed. The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, however, said the move was «another indicator that elections are around the corner in J&K».
