Electric car catches fire in Bengaluru. Here's what causes EV fires and why electric two-wheelers are at higher risk
Bengaluru, an electric car burst into flames near Dalmia Circle in the JPNagar area, creating a horrifying scene that has gone viral on social media. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but the cause of the fire remains unknown. Electric vehicle fires, although rare in theory, often attract significant attention when they do occur. These incidents are primarily attributed to the high energy density of electric vehicle battery packs, which store a large amount of energy in a compact space. When the battery pack is damaged, an internal short circuit can trigger a chain reaction known as thermal runaway. During this process, the battery generates more heat than it can dissipate, leading to a fire. About 95% of battery fires in electric vehicles are classified as ignition fires, producing jet-like directional flames. The remaining 5% involve a vapor cloud explosion. Several factors can cause a battery to catch fire, including physical damage from accidents, manufacturing defects, battery faults, workshop repairs, arson, external fires, or overheating.

SC rejects plea seeking permit to allow green, joined crackers
The directions were passed on a clutch of interlocutory applications in a case pertaining to the ban on the sale, purchase and use of firecrackers in India. The court had last week refused to interfere with a Delhi government order putting a comprehensive ban on manufacture, storage, sale and bursting of firecrackers. BJP Lok Sabha MP from North East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari, had told a bench headed by Justice Bopanna that a complete ban on bursting of crackers has been imposed by the Delhi government despite the court allowing bursting of green firecrackers. Tiwari's counsel had last week added that many states have imposed a complete ban despite the orders of the top court. Refusing to interfere, the bench had verbally told the counsel for Tiwari that «locally, if there is a ban, there is a ban.
