Manisha Koirala reveals she was left behind by friends during her battle with cancer, admits she felt ‘very lonely’
cancer diagnosis while devastating, can sometimes help you see life in a new perspective and helps you distinguish who are your true well-wishers and who are fairweather friends. In a recent interview, Bollywood diva Manisha Koirala reflected on her journey of surviving cancer and how the difficult diagnosis and her battle with terminal illness made her confront some rather uncomfortable truths. In a candid chat with NDTV, the ‘Heeramandi’ star said, “It’s been a journey. It has also been a learning experience. I really believed that I had multiple friends. I thought partying together, travelling together, having fun together, people will sit with me in my pain. That was not so. People are not capable of sitting with anybody’s pain, let alone their own pain. We always try to find excuses to not feel pain. We want to escape pain. That’s human nature. I found myself very lonely, and I realised that only my immediate family was around me,” she revealed. The ‘Akele Hum, Akele Tum’ actress revealed that although her community — the Koirala clan was huge and influential in Nepal, almost nobody came to her aide, and the only people who offered unconditional support was her parents, her brother and his family. “ I realised that when everybody leaves me, these are the people who will be with me. My priority is my immediate family, no matter what. They come first in my life, everybody else later..” she revealed.

Kurmi demand for ST status meets BJP's anti-corruption plank, TMC's development card in Purulia
Purulia Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal with lack of industrialisation and corruption allegations dominating the poll narrative in the backdrop of the omnipresent local Kurmi struggle for Scheduled Tribe status. The stage in this Kurmi-majority seat looks all set for a fierce three-cornered battle between incumbent BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, TMC's former state minister Shantiram Mahato and Congress's old war horse Nepal Mahato, all of who are represent the Kurmi scheduled caste community. While the BJP perceptively earned the Kurmi confidence to dislodge the TMC from the seat in 2019, the latter, in its bid to regain the community's support in the region, has announced in its poll manifesto that it will stand by its demand for ST status and pursue the Centre for its approval. Even smaller parties like SUCI (Communist) have fielded candidates from the same community in the form of young student leader Sushmita Mahato.

On This Day: Events in history on May 12; From Florence Nightingale's birthday to Soviet Union ending blockade of Berlin
Berlin in 1949 marked a significant turning point in the early stages of the Cold War. The blockade had begun in June 1948, when the Soviet Union, in response to the introduction of a new currency in West Berlin, cut off all land and water routes into the city, effectively isolating West Berlin from the Western Allies. The blockade led to the Berlin Airlift, a massive humanitarian effort by the United States, United Kingdom, and other Western allies to supply West Berlin by air.

BJP's swipe at Rahul Gandhi: He could not contest from Amethi but speaking of forming govt
BJP on Saturday made light of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's readiness for a debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as it questioned his knowledge of issues and his standing, noting that he is neither the president of his party nor the leader of the opposition. Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi also took a swipe at Gandhi over his claim that the opposition INDIA bloc will win the Lok Sabha polls, saying someone who could not file his nomination from Amethi is speaking about forming government at the Centre. «Phenomenon thy name is Rahul Gandhi,» he said mockingly. Gandhi, who lost Amethi to Irani in the 2019 general elections, has this time been fielded by the Congress from Rae Bareli and is contesting against BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh. Gandhi family aide Kishori Lal Sharma is taking on Irani in Amethi.

Three dimensions of greatness
Elon Musk imagines a world where cars have no drivers; but he cannot imagine a world without employees in offices as he vociferously argues against work-from-home culture. Judith Butler imagines a world without Zionism, a world where 'they' pronoun is normalised, but not a world where Islam embraces same-sex marriages. Both these people are changing the world in their own way — subverting conventional technology and discourse. These follow the saviour myths of monotheistic mythologies. Understandable when one traces their roots, via South Africa and East Europe. Their imagination makes no room for Jainism, the faith from South Asia of some of the world's most successful mercantile and banking communities, who worked with Buddhist kings, Jain kings, Hindu kings, Muslim kings, British imperialists and even patriotic and nationalistic governments, without ever incurring the wrath of a mob.
