New research reveals genetic basis for blood pressure and hypertension tisk
blood pressure and, in turn, their risk of developing hypertension, according to a new research. Genomics is the study of an individual's entire genetic makeup, including the inter-relationships between genes, which are segments forming DNA that resides inside human cells. Data from more than a million people were analysed to discover regions on the genome, including over a 100 new ones, linked to blood pressure. The international study, led by Queen Mary University of London, UK, is published in the journal Nature Genetics. «Our study found additional genomic locations that together explain a much larger part of the genetic differences in people's blood pressure. Knowing a person's risk for developing hypertension could lead to tailored treatments, which are more likely to be effective,» first author Jacob Keaton, staff scientist at the National Human Genome Research Institute's (NHGRI), US, said.

Don't bark your head off about a 'stray dog menace', deal with it humanely
We have two dogs now: Sunny and Jinny. If I ever raise my voice at them, my mother threatens to leave me out of her will. They now spend afternoons sleeping at Ma's feet, getting into growling matches with crows on the window grill, and making it impossible for all of us to come home in a bad mood. Right now, both are in the only two office chairs at my desk. I'm sitting cross-legged on the floor typing this.

Where did our ancestors end up after migrating from Africa? New study has some clues
global spread of Homo sapiens. But where did these pioneers go after leaving Africa? After years of debate, a new study offers an answer. These bands of hunter-gatherers appear to have lingered for thousands of years as a homogeneous population in a geographic hub that spanned Iran, southeast Iraq and northeast Saudi Arabia before going on to settle all of Asia and Europe starting roughly 45,000 years ago, scientists said on Monday. Their findings were based on genomic datasets drawn from ancient DNA and modern gene pools, combined with paleoecological evidence that showed that this region would have represented an ideal habitat. The researchers called this region, part of what is called the Persian Plateau, a «hub» for these people — who numbered perhaps only in the thousands — before they continued onward millennia later to more distant locales.
