Israel deepens its operation in Gaza City, as pockets of militancy continue to dog the military
Israeli forces deepened an operation in the Gaza Strip's largest city in what the military said was meant to weed out militants, sending thousands of Palestinians fleeing on Monday from an area already ravaged in the early weeks of the nine-month-long war. The incursion into the eastern part of Gaza City expands Israel's engagement in the northern part of the beleaguered territory, an area Israel said it had seized control of months ago yet which has seen pockets of militant resurgence that have scaled back Israeli military gains and drawn forces back into such operations. Israel had ordered evacuations in the area before the raid was launched, the military said. Heavy fighting in the area in the initial weeks of the war all but emptied out Gaza City and its environs, and the Israeli military has prevented most people from returning to their homes there. But several hundred thousands of Palestinians remain in the area, living in the shells of their homes or shelters. The fresh fighting meant new displacement for many residents there.

IT now a tactical buy, not a portfolio bet; 4 other stocks to invest in: Vinit Bolinjkar
Vinit Bolinjkar, Head of Equity Research, Ventura Securities, says he is constructive on Shalby Hospitals and thinks the stock can touch Rs 500 in the next couple of years. The second stock he likes is NTPC and says the NTPC green IPO should lead to a significant re-rating of the stock. He also expects a 50% upside on Senco Gold. He is also gung-ho on Wockhardt where he expects outsized disproportionate returns given that the company is coming out with a new molecule which, once it goes into commercial production, may see the stock double. Now that TCS has kick-started the earning season, what do you make of this quarter that has gone by? We did have some headwinds coming by. There was a heatwave, elections and so lots were happening in this quarter. Give us a generic view and also your specific view on what IT companies are expected to do and how their numbers are expected to look given TCS has come out with a stellar set of numbers. Vinit Bolinjkar: TCS and Tata Elxsi numbers are slightly lower than those reported in the previous quarters, but the growth trajectory that both the companies have guided for is resoundingly strong and the pipeline also seems to be improving and getting better.

Court allows Arvind Kejriwal's wife access to his medical records, permits her to seek doctors' advice
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita access to his medical records and also permitted her to independently consult and seek advice from the medical board or doctors on his behalf. The court, however, rejected Kejriwal's application seeking directions to prison authorities allowing Sunita Kejriwal to be his attendant during consultations with doctors. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja said Kejriwal had not been admitted to a hospital and according to Delhi Prison Rules, permission was granted to a family member as an attendant with an undertrial prisoner by the jail superintendent in consultation with the medical officer in-charge, only when the prisoner is admitted in hospital. «This court sees no reason to carve out an exception for the applicant (Kejriwal) by going against the prison rules, more particularly in view of the submission of the jail authorities that several other inmates are also undergoing treatment for the same ailment as the applicant and who have not been permitted to have an attendant,» the court said.

How pigeon exposure can cause irreparable lung disease. Here’s what you must know
health risks. Recent cases have highlighted how prolonged exposure to pigeon feathers and droppings can lead to severe allergic reactions and respiratory issues among residents. Here's detailed information on these risks and what you need to know. Case Study: Allergic reactions in East Delhi A new case study sheds light on the health hazards posed by pigeon droppings and feathers, revealing a troubling incident involving an 11-year-old boy from East Delhi. As per a TOI report, the boy developed severe allergic reactions after prolonged contact with pigeon feathers and droppings, leading to potentially fatal consequences. He was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP), a rare but serious lung condition triggered by allergic reactions to pigeon proteins. Understanding Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP) Dr. Dhiren Gupta, Co-Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) explained to TOI that HP is a chronic interstitial lung disease characterized by lung inflammation and scarring, making breathing difficult. While more common among adults, HP is rare in children, affecting only 2-4 per one lakh population annually. The boy received immediate medical attention, including steroids and high-flow oxygen therapy to reduce lung inflammation and restore normal breathing.

Budget 2024: Is a Rs 10 lakh insurance the vitamin India's healthcare system needs?
Union Budget 2024 that is set to be presented on July 23, the Centre is mulling over the idea of doubling the beneficiary base under its flagship Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme over the next three years, with all those aged above 70 years to be brought under its ambit, to begin with, and also increase the insurance coverage to Rs 10 lakh per year. These proposals or some parts of it are expected to be announced in the Union Budget. In the interim Budget, the government increased the allocation for the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), which provides health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore families, to Rs 7,200 crore while Rs 646 crore was assigned for the Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM).

Budget 2024: Hospitality players seek infra status for hotels
hotels as infrastructure in the upcoming Union Budget. This move aims to boost investment attractiveness and move away from luxury or 'sin goods' categorization. They also seek incentives like tax breaks for eco-friendly practices, emphasizing tourism's potential as a driver of GDP and job creation. «The sector is burdened with high taxation, expensive and multifarious licences, approvals and compliances. Hotels are capital intensive with a long gestation period. Cost of operating hotels is high and largely fixed. This makes investments in hotels risky. There is a need to make hotel investments more attractive with an improved rate of investment and to promote ease of doing business,» Hotel Association of India (HAI) President KB Kachru told news agency PTI. He emphasized that the upcoming Union Budget presents an opportunity to maximize India's hospitality sector contribution towards India Vision 2047 by redefining its policy perspective, shifting away from categorizing hotels as luxury or 'sin' goods.

Ajay Vora expects 16% compounding earnings growth; sees banks and metals doing better this year
Ajay Vora, Executive V-P & Head-Equities, Nuvama Asset Management, says they are playing two broad themes. On the consumption side, both at the domestic level as well as the exporters to the overseas market of the household goods looks interesting. Within domestic also, the consumption should ideally now pick up because if you look at segments like apparel, vacations, and the whole hospitality segment – I sense that demand is still very robust over there. They are also playing the infra theme through cement as a sector because we believe that with the consolidation happening there will be a decent price discipline which will result in higher profitability going forward. How are you dissecting the market construct because the kind of move that one has seen since the election results have been parabolic and now you have another event, the budget in just about two weeks. Ajay Vora: Broadly, we have been constructive on the markets throughout last year. Although there were some hiccups in between, I think till the time the earnings growth profile was pretty strong, I think that there is very little downside to the markets and that is why from the election outcome day also we have seen a very sharp rally from the lows.
