China must boost consumption to escape debt-deflation loop and better nominal GDP growth
nominal GDP (unadjusted for inflation) growth. At the starting point, nominal GDP growth is at 4%, significantly lower than the 10% rate the country routinely churned out between 2017 and 2019. This is because the GDP deflator (the broadest measure of prices in the economy) has been stuck in negative territory for six consecutive quarters, the worst run since the late-1990s. So, lifting the GDP deflator back toward a 2-3% growth run rate will be key. It is through this lens that one must evaluate the recent slate of policy actions, specifically, whether they will revive nominal GDP growth and lift China out of the debt-deflation loop. These measures are supportive, but not sufficient yet.

Formula for success
material wealth and happiness. The saints speak of another race — the race to God that leads to lasting joy and spiritual riches. We have been given this human existence so that our soul can find its way back to the Almighty, and we are all in a race to get there. The aim of a race is to reach the finish line in the shortest possible time. In the race to the Divine, the finish line is the merger of our soul with God. Yet, it is not a race in which we compete with fellow travellers to be the only winner. Instead, it is a race that each of us will eventually win. For this race, we embark on the inner spiritual journey through meditation to experience the Supreme's love and light for ourselves.

North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to fight in Ukraine, Pentagon says
North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to train and fight in Ukraine within «the next several weeks,» the Pentagon said Monday, in a move that Western leaders say will intensify the almost three-year war and jolt relations in the Indo-Pacific region. Some of the North Korean soldiers have already moved closer to Ukraine, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said, and were believed to be heading for the Kursk border region, where Russia has been struggling to push back a Ukrainian incursion. Earlier Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed recent Ukrainian intelligence reports that some North Korean military units were already in the Kursk region.

Did the Democrats circumvent democracy by selecting Harris? Shark Tank star Kevin O'Leary thinks so
O'Leary drew parallels to the 2016 Democratic primary, arguing that the party favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders, limiting competition. He contended that the Democratic National Committee's bias in that election mirrored the current situation with Harris. Despite pushback from the panelists, including CNN's Abby Phillips, who argued that Harris did compete in the primary process, O'Leary maintained his stance, claiming many Democrats felt sidelined in favor of a predetermined nominee. Priyanka Gandhi responds to constituency visit allegations with humour
Wayanad (Kerala): In response to allegations levelled by her political opponents that she would rarely visit the constituency if elected, Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi light-heartedly remarked on Monday that the people in the hill district might become fed up and request that she not visit so frequently. In her speech at the corner meeting in Panamaram, the AICC General Secretary shared her experience as a mother, noting how she frequently visited the school where her son was studying. «I want to tell you a story. When I was leaving my son in boarding school, the Principal said to me, you know these families, the big families come and leave children here, they never come to see the children. So I want to tell you one thing, come at least once in four months and see them. »When four months were over, when I went to pick up my son the Principal told me please don't come so much. Just like the Principal, you are thinking I would never come. Just like the Principal, you are going to tell after being fed up, please don't come this much," she said. Priyanka further said, just like her son the people of Wayanad are also her family.

Congress seeks all-party meet to get clarity on whether census would include enumeration of castes
Congress on Monday sought an all-party meeting to get clarity on whether the next census would include a detailed enumeration of all castes and whether the census will be used for determining the strength of each state in the Lok Sabha. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the extension of the tenure of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner has been notified and it means that the long-delayed Census that was due in 2021 will finally be conducted soon. «But there is still absolutely no clarity on two crucial issues. Will this new Census include a detailed enumeration of ALL castes in the country, in addition to that of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes that has been done in every Census since 1951? According to the Constitution of India, such a Caste Census is the sole responsibility of the Union Government,» Ramesh said in a post on X. «Will this Census be used for determining the strength of each state in the Lok Sabha as provided for in Article 82 of the Constitution of India (which says that the first Census taken after the year 2026 and the publication of its results will the basis of any such reconstitution)? Will this work to the disadvantage of states that have been pioneers in family planning?» the Congress leader said.

Geopolitical conflicts' spillover on India could cause negative wealth effects, Eco Survey says
Economic Survey by the Ministry of Finance. Transformer steel shortage could impact India's energy ambitions: GTRI
power sector expansion plans, think tank GTRI said on Monday. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that India's power sector is facing a 30 per cent shortage of CRGO steel, essential for electric motors and transformers. With domestic production meeting only about 10-12 per cent of demand, India relies heavily on imports, it added. It said the immediate cause of the CRGO steel shortage is import uncertainty caused by the delayed license renewals by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for many foreign suppliers from Japan, South Korea and China.

top seven cities underscoring the sustained appeal of prime locations to retailers led by rising consumption and is expected to continue the momentum until the end of this calendar year. Gross leasing of retail spaces across these cities, including Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, and Hyderabad is projected to exceed 6.5 — 7 million sq ft by the end of 2024 after topping 5.3 million sq ft in the first three quarters ending September, showed a JLL India study. “Despite limited new retail space additions of slightly over 1 million sq. ft, the top seven cities’ robust gross leasing activity indicates retailers' strong appetite for prime retail locations. Fashion and apparel remained the top category with a 37% share, followed by food & beverage and entertainment at 18% and 12% respectively,” said Samantak Das, Chief Economist and Head of Research & REIS, India, JLL.
