Irdai on Wednesday proposed to increase the «free look» period for return of the policy to 30 days and make nomination mandatory for life policies. Currently, a policyholder can examine the insurance policy and opt out if not satisfied with any of the terms and conditions mentioned in the policy within the «free look» period of 15 days (30 days in case of electronic policies) from the date of receipt of policy document, by stating the reasons for the objection. In a draft Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Protection of Policyholders' Interests and Allied Matters of Insurers) Regulations, 2024, Irdai proposed to consolidate several provisions of the different laws related to insurance. On protection of interest of policyholders, the draft said, «The free-look period for the policies, obtained through any mode, shall be 30 days from the date of receipt of the policy document».

In March 2023, 57 memorandum of understandings (MoUs) were signed for generating an investment of about Rs 29,500 crore in the sector by FY28. Besides, the scheme envisaged addition of 25 MT capacity for producing specialty steel grades and generating about 17,000 employment opportunities, Ministry of Steel said in an statement. On the status of the scheme, the ministry said «as of December 2023, the selected companies have already invested about Rs 12,900 crore against an investment commitment of Rs 21,000 crore up to the current financial year.»

National Company Law Appellate Tribunal on Wednesday stayed the NCLT Mumbai bench order to initiate a corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) against Sporta Technologies, which operates the fantasy sports platform Dream 11. However, it has also directed the Interim Resolution Professional (IRP), appointed by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) after suspending the board of Dream 11, not to take any further steps till the next date of hearing, scheduled for February 23. A three-member bench of the appellate tribunal also issued notice to the IRP of Sporta Technologies and Resolution Professional of Reward Business Solution, directing them to file a reply within a week. «List this Appeal on 23.02.2024,» the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) order said, adding that «In the meantime, the order impugned shall remain stayed. No steps, till the next date shall be taken by the IRP in the CIRP».

Gujarat police have seized Rs 5,956 crore drugs and arrested 48 foreign nationals involved in drug trafficking during the last two years, the state government informed in the assembly on Wednesday. During a heated debate in the assembly over the issue of drugs, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi asked the opposition Congress to stop doing politics on the matter. The minister also questioned Congress' intention to only mention the Adani Group-run Mundra port in Kutch where central agencies in 2021 seized 3,000 kilograms of heroin valued at Rs 20,000 crore from two containers imported from Afghanistan. During the question hour, Congress MLA Geniben Thakor sought to know if the state government wants to arrest those handling operations at the Mundra port in view of the seizure of large quantities of drugs in 2021.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said two Congress MLAs, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and former minister Basanta Das, have decided to "join the government". Sarma welcomed both the legislators at the chief minister's chamber inside the assembly complex while the Budget session of the House was in progress. Purkayastha, who has been with the Congress for several decades since his NSUI days, was elected from the Karimganj North constituency in 2021. Ganpat Gaikwad and four accomplices, arrested for an assassination attempt on a Shiv Sena leader within a police station, have been remanded to a 14-day judicial custody by a local court. Besides Gaikwad, Harshal Kene, Sandeep Sarvankar, Divyesh alias Vicky Ganatra, and driver Ranjit Yadav, were presented before the court on Wednesday at the conclusion of their police custody amidst tight security measures surrounding the court premises. The MLA is accused of firing upon Mahesh Gaikwad, the Kalyan unit head of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, inside the room of the senior inspector's office at Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar earlier this month.
