Senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government on Sunday, triggering buzz about a vertical split in the party. The Sharad Pawar-led faction has already taken steps to disqualify the nine ‘rebel’ lawmakers, with both groups insisting that they had majority support.
The Ajit Pawar-led faction will need the support of at least 36 MLAs in order to avoid disqualification under the provisions of the anti-defection law. Both groups held meetings in Mumbai on Wednesday with Ajit Pawar drawing sharply ahead of his uncle.
As many as 35 out of 53 NCP MLAs were present at the party meeting convened by the Maharashtra deputy chief minister. Reports citing party sources also claimed that the number was set to increase.
Meanwhile 13 MLAs attended the meeting convened by the NCP chief.
