This decades-old “trade” of young girls being wedded to aged men with deep pockets — just for a few weeks — had slowed down after a series of crackdowns in 2018. Many even assumed it had died out, but they were mistaken.
Instead of shady hotels and halls, marriages are now performed on 'WhatsApp. Most grooms are rich, wealthy businessmen from Oman, Qatar and Bahrain who pay a lumpsum amount to marry young girls. After nikah, brides are sent to their husbands on tourist visas where they are often exploited and sexually abused, reported TOI.
22-year-old Fathima was left with no other option but to sign up for the marriage to help her sick grandmother and fund her younger sister's education. The groom, nearly three times her age, promised Rs 2 lakh and planned to take her to Oman. This is part of a broader pattern where young brides from Hyderabad's Old City are matched with wealthy Arab clients through brokers.
Fathima was asked to Karnataka's Mysuru with the agents to complete the nikah. The two agents had set up Fathima's video-conference-nikah inside an SUV in exchange for Rs 1 lakh. But the deal was called off and now she must wait till the next proposal comes.
