The deals come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on his way to Paris, further cementing the growing ties between the two nations. Sources within the government told The Times of India that the Rs 63,000 crore deal for 22 single-seat Rafale-M jets and four twin-seat trainer jets for the Indian Navy is currently under review by the Cabinet Committee for Security (CCS), awaiting final approval.
In parallel, the Rs 33,500 crore deal for the construction of three additional diesel-electric Scorpene submarines is also in its final stages. The submarines will be built at Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) in collaboration with French company Naval Group.
This deal will soon be presented to the CCS following inter-ministerial consultations.
«The CCS will take up the Rafale-M deal after the PM’s return from his France-US trip. The cost negotiations for the Scorpenes took a little longer as MDL initially quoted a higher price. However, the aim is to finalise both deals before the end of this fiscal year on March 31,» said a government source.
