DC Studio has taken out a decade-old character from oblivion and made its first live-action Latino super hero film. With this, it also embarked on a journey with James Gunn, the popular movie maker.
‘Blue Beetle’ beginsAngel Manuel Soto was recovering from a disease in his native country of Puerto Rico when he was offered to direct ‘Blue Beetle’ with its distinct Latino perspective. Earlier in 2020, Soto’s movie ‘Charm City Kings’ won an award at the Sundance Film Festival and has created ripples. Warner Bros. and DC asked Sotto to direct Latino star cast ‘Cobra Kai’s’ Xolo Mariduena with special emphasis on Latino identity.
‘Blue Beetle’ in crisisThe film was complete in 2022, but by that time Warner Bros. and Discovery merged and that changed everything, ‘Blue Beetle’ was put in limbo and it was not certain what would happen to it. Gunn and Peter Safron salvaged the situation after the movie division of DC became DC Studio. ‘Blue Beetle’ will now be a part of DC’s future plans.
Gunn salvages ‘Blue Beetle’Sotto said that Gunn and Safran saw the potential, a lot of other movies were dropped, but ‘Blue Beetle’ was on the top of priorities. It is interesting to note that ‘Blue Beetle’ was a very old character, it first appeared as Dan Garret in ‘Mystery Men Comics’ in 1939, it was followed by Ted Kord in ‘Captain Atom’ in 1966. Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko created Ted Kord.
