Kroshik (meaning “Crumbs”), first gained widespread attention after he was rescued from the basement of a hospital in Russia. He had been fed scraps, biscuits, and soup, leading to his staggering weight of 38 pounds.
At a veterinary weight-loss clinic in Perm, Russia, Crumbs made progress, shedding 7 pounds. However, he suddenly developed breathing difficulties and passed away over the weekend, as reported by NewsX. Vets at the clinic suspect his dense fat deposits masked cancerous growths on his spleen and other organs, making them difficult to detect in scans. Galiana More, who manages the Matroskin cat shelter where Crumbs was treated, believes the tumors triggered multi-organ failure.
An official cause of death is pending the results of a full post-mortem exam, scheduled for Monday. Even with this exam, determining whether Crumbs' health issues stemmed primarily from his weight or the hidden tumors remains challenging, according to More. “In cases of such extensive organ failure, the body often cannot keep up, though Kroshik fought hard,” she explained.
“We're awaiting the exam findings to understand what caused Crumbs’ death, but the final report will take around five days.” More noted that cats often mask their symptoms until very late, revealing their illness only after death. “Cats hold on until the last moment. Kroshik had no signs of shortness of breath or digestive issues,” she said.
“While an ultrasound was not possible, we closely monitored his health, knowing the risks of his weight,” she
