The tournament has played a key role in the development of Indian cricketers. Players like Shreyanka Patil and Saika Ishaque have used the WPL as a stepping stone to earn national call-ups. With key overseas stars such as Alyssa Healy, Sophie Molineux, and Kate Cross missing this season due to injuries, Indian players will have more opportunities to showcase their abilities.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur emphasized the importance of the tournament for domestic players. «As India captain, I'm very excited for this season because a lot of domestic cricketers have prepared themselves for this tournament,» she said during the Star Sports Press Room — WPL Captain's Huddle.
«Even before the auctions, we discussed that a lot of domestic cricketers have done really well, and everyone had names in their minds to watch out for. We are really hoping they do well and that the Indian team becomes stronger.»
Players to watch
Out-of-favour India opener Shafali Verma, who has been in good form in domestic cricket, will be keen to impress for Delhi Capitals to strengthen her chances for a national team return. With a tour of England in July and the home ODI World Cup approaching, her performances will be closely monitored.
