Arunachal Pradesh is part of India .. we have been very clear on this: Jaishankar dismisses China's ‘ludicrous’ claims
S Jaishankar has reiterated India's firm stance on the territorial integrity of Arunachal Pradesh during his visit to Singapore, strongly opposing China's claims over the northeastern state, as per an ANI report. Speaking at the Institute of South Asian Studies of the National University of Singapore, Jaishankar dismissed China's claims as "ludicrous," affirming that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India based on its status within the country, not on external assertions. Responding to recent assertions by China, he said that India has consistently rejected such claims, reiterating that Arunachal Pradesh is an inherent part of the nation.

Coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel, is preparing for a long goodbye
coal to history, the dirtiest fossil fuel is having a moment. Thanks to a combination of China’s energy insecurity — pushing Beijing back to trusted power sources — plus rising Indian demand, the continued fallout from the war in Ukraine and faltering international programs to wean developing economies off fossil fuels, coal is proving remarkably resilient. Output hit a record last year, and producers are preparing for a future where they will be required for decades yet to balance renewable energy. Even prices are holding up. While thermal coal is trading at just a fraction of the lofty levels reached in 2022, after Russia’s invasion of its neighbor, prices are still well above historic norms. Benchmark Newcastle coal futures are changing hands just under $130 a ton, roughly a quarter of the peak but higher than any level between 2011 and 2020.

Saved from whaling, blue whales now face threat from global warming, human activities: Study
global warming and other human threats like underwater noise, pollution and disrupted food sources, according to a new stocktake of their population. Researchers found the greatest genetic differences among the blue whale populations in the eastern Pacific, Antarctic subspecies and the pygmy subspecies of the eastern Indian and western Pacific. Blue whales average about 27 metres in length. Natural selection could be one of the reasons behind these differences, they said. «Each of these groups need to be conserved to maintain biodiversity in the species, and there are indications that natural selection in different environments contributed to driving genetic differences between the high-level groups,» said Catherine Attard, College of Science and Engineering, Flinders University, Australia. He is the first author of the study published in the journal Animal Conservation.

The East Asian tech hub: K-college the latest rage in K-pop Krazy Gen Z universe
K-pop, K-dramas and K-noodles, with Indian students increasingly considering South Korea for higher education, according to consultants. The number of Indian students headed to South Korea is set to double in 2024 compared to two years ago, according to Rohin Kapoor, partner, management consulting, BDO. “South Korea has rolled out the red carpet for Indian students by offering attractive scholarship schemes at top universities over the last two years,” Kapoor said. At around 2,000 this year, the number is still just a fraction of the Indian students enrolled in traditionally popular destinations such as the US, UK, Canada and Australia. But the East Asian technology hub is fast emerging as an alternative destination for Indian students, owing to factors such as a large number of courses taught in English, a developed market with ample internship and employment opportunities, pro-international student policies and competitive costs along with a government push to attract overseas students.

How India’s booming ecommerce market is spurring a packaging makeover among FMCG companies
booming ecommerce market is spurring a packaging makeover among consumer goods makers, as they chase the growing number of online shoppers. Companies are seeking to make their products more robust to survive the rigours of shipping, with some saying they have already seen results, in the form of fewer returns. ITC, for instance, changed the cap of shower gels to prevent leakage even when there is no scotch tape. This is one among changes in the packaging design for most of its fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). Parle Products is adding protective layers for its `30-80 biscuit packs, which mostly sell online. It has also introduced a separate outer packing for bundled biscuit packs to be sold online, to ensure they are not broken. Goods sold online change hands more times than offline, often being roughly handled by delivery personnel, company executives said, adding that the chances of leaks or transit damage increase while shipping individual units.

Searching for Google: Will legal hurdles threaten tech giant’s grip on India?
Google appears to be hurdling as many regulatory barriers lately in India as the answers its search engine generates in response to a query. Ironically, the latest in the list of uncomfortable questions is the Mountain View giant’s alleged role in limiting local consumers’ choice, contrary to what the encyclopaedic Google search engine is actually designed to offer. Last Friday, the Competition Commission of India (CCI ) prima facie ordered a probe to examine Google’s Play Store billing policies after Indian companies raised concerns about hosting their apps on the go-to consumer platform.

Indians’ electric love to power EV sales to a record
Electric vehicles (EVs) are set to scale a new milestone, breaching the 100,000 sales mark this financial year (FY24), fuelling the government’s ambitious aim of electrifying up to 30% of all passenger vehicle sales by 2030. The sales surge would be propelled by falling battery prices and resultant product price cuts by some automakers, robust government support for eco-friendly vehicles, higher prices of fossil fuels and growing environmental awareness among consumers. Launch of new models by automakers is also helping attract new buyers into this segment. This year’s sales performance would mark a 67% jump from the 60,910 electric PVs sold in FY23. In the electric two-wheeler segment too, sales are expected to climb 25% to an all-time high of more than 758,000 units this fiscal, according to market research firm Jato Dynamics.

Telecom firms struggle to monetise amid incomplete 5G rollout
Telecom companies, which haven’t been able to offer a full 5G experience to customers, are failing to monetise it. Curiously, this seems to be the fate of the odd ones—1G, 3G and 5G. India recently became the fastest 5G rollout nation in the world. The country’s top two carriers, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, have collectively splurged around $25 billion in buying 5G airwaves and launching their next-generation wireless broadband services. Between them, they have 165 million 5G customers. But neither of them has seen any serious monetisation of their 5G businesses even 18 months after they introduced next-gen networks. Telecom companies attribute the challenge in monetisation to the continuing absence of compelling 5G use cases and applications for both retail and enterprise users and a yet-tomature devices ecosystem.

India's coal & lignite production surpasses 1-billion-tonne mark
lignite production in India crossed 1 billion tonnes in 2023-24, as of March 22, in line with the government's target for this financial year. The output was 6.7% higher year-on-year. The government's mission for 1-billion-tonne output was a milestone set a few years ago, considering the increasing electricity requirements. Surpassing the 1-billion-tonne mark in coal and lignite production reduces the dependence on imports, the government said.
