Naga organizations discontent with Supreme Court decision to close Oting massacre case
Indian Army personnel involved in the Oting massacre on December 4, 2021. These organizations include the Oting Students' Union (OSU), Naga Students' Federation (NSF), NSCN (I-M), and Naga Hoho. The Supreme Court's decision followed an FIR against the army personnel accused of a botched operation that resulted in the deaths of 13 civilians. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and P B Varale stated that because Nagaland is under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, sanction from the competent authority was required under Section 6 of the Act to proceed with prosecuting the personnel. On February 28, 2023, the competent authority declined to grant this sanction.

At UN summit, India calls for global shift to sustainable living
climate change and global success is more likely if affordable solutions are offered, India has said at the United Nations «Summit of the Future». Addressing the summit in New York on Friday, Leela Nandan, secretary in the Union environment ministry, also said that climate change discussions often focus solely on emission reductions, but «we are more likely to succeed if we offer affordable solutions, not simply impose decisions». The Summit of the Future brings together world leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss global challenges and strengthen multilateral cooperation to tackle emerging threats. Citing an estimate by the International Energy Agency, Nandan said, «If we were to put our actions into the right context in terms of saving energy, saving water, reducing waste, reducing e-waste, adopting sustainable food systems, we would have reduced annual global emissions by 2 billion tons by 2030.»

Oyo snaps up US chain Motel 6 in $525 million-deal, eyes overseas expansion
Motel 6, the budget hotel chain that has lined U.S. highways for decades, will be sold to Oyo, an India-based hotel operator, the companies announced Friday. Blackstone, the private equity giant and the owner of Motel 6's parent company, said the transaction would be an all-cash deal for $525 million. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year, and would include the chain's offshoot hotel brand, Studio 6. Oyo expanded into the United States in 2019, and has recently ramped up efforts to expand further. It currently operates more than 300 hotels domestically. The company, which specializes in budget hotels and proudly describes itself as «a startup,» had received a large investment from SoftBank. But some troubling incidents in India in recent years raised questions about some of its business practices.

The eclectic innovator: Sam Pitroda's unconventional roadmap to success
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. On the 40th anniversary this year of the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the pioneering Indian telecom institution, spare a thought for its zesty founder who is still making waves, though perhaps not quite in the way he would like to. In the evolutionary history of Indian technology and innovation, Satyanarayan (Sam) Gangaram Pitroda’s status as India’s original tech guru is secure, though he doesn’t get enough credit for the telecom revolution that has seen the country’s teledensity jump from around 2% in the 1980s to over 90% today.

Mehul Choksi seen in Belgium, Delhi rushes to Bruges
Mehul Choksi, are seeking to get him back to India from Belgium, where he has been spotted, said people with knowledge of the matter. One of the two prime accused in the $2-billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, Choksi-otherwise resident in Antigua-has proven elusive and is said to have to come to the European country for medical treatment, thus providing the agencies an opportunity to get hold of him. After getting wind of his visit, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought the immediate detention of Choksi, said the people cited above. With Belgium seeking a formal extradition request, the Indian authorities are working on the process so that Choksi can be held and eventually brought to India, they added.

Traditional wisdom: How India’s repository of jnana is lying unread and unstudied
Ashtavakra Gita is not very well known; most Indians have heard of only one: the Bhagavad Gita, a part of the Mahabharata. Most don't know that there are some 60 Gitas in the Mahabharata, besides others that are not part of larger treatises. The Ashtavakra Gita is one of the most profound and yet most esoteric of those standalones, whose most recent English translation is, appropriately, by Bibek Debroy, who has also written about the Mahabharata's other Gitas. In New Delhi last week, Nirmala Sitharaman launched Life, Death and the Ashtavakra Gita by Bibek Debroy and Hindol Sengupta not as finance minister (as Debroy also did not translate it as chairman of the PM's Economic Advisory Council!) and «not even as Nirmala Sitharaman», as she put it. And the portions she read out from the ancient treatise, which is a conversation between Ashtavakra and King Janaka, explained her seemingly cryptic assertion. Chapter 5, Verse 4 of the Ashtavakra Gita, as translated by Debroy avers: «You are not the body. The body is not yours. You are not the enjoyer, or the doer. Your form is that of pure consciousness. You are the constant witness, indifferent. Roam around happy.» The gentle smile on Sitharaman's face indicated that she has indeed internalised this wisdom, perhaps because she had been already introduced to Ashtavakra Gita's wisdom as a child by her grandmother.

RBI tells banks to take legal recourse in standoff with CBI
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has advised banks to seek legal remedy in case of a stand-off with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over matters classified as fraud. The RBI's advice was in response to the CBI returning complaints filed by some banks to probe accounts tagged as fraud and where they have already filed an FIR (first information report). In several cases, the investigative agency has informed the lender that its complaint has been returned because the borrower concerned has not been given an in-person hearing before the account was classified as fraud.

Switzerland's KLW Wheelco company resumes Ukraine-made wheel supplies to Indian Railways after two years
KLW Wheelco has supplied 2,000 Ukrainian-make forged wheels to the Indian Railways in the past few weeks, said a senior Indian government official. This is the first such delivery from the war-torn nation since the Russia-Ukraine conflict started in early 2022. The development comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Kyiv where he met with his counterpart, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. «Another 3,500 forged wheels are on their way from Ukraine. Orders for 10,000 forged wheels worth ₹72 crore have been placed with the Swiss company earlier this year,» the official told ET. These wheels are being manufactured in Dnipro (Ukraine) by Interpipe Group, a global producer of steel pipes and railway wheels. The wheels are for Bogie Open Wagon with Air Brakes (BOXN wagons), which are largely used for carrying goods such as coal, and are being loaded from an Ukrainian port in the Black Sea.

India in box seat after Jasprit Bumrah takes four against Bangladesh
India could have enforced the follow on, such was their dominance, but there was no need to, with all the time in the world left in the Test match. At 81 for 3, a lead of 308, with plenty of batting to come there really is only one way this Test match is headed. Ravichandran Ashwin only pushed on to 113 but Ravindra Jadeja missing a century, nicking off on 86, was the highlight of the morning. India pushed on to 376, a score that looked unlikely at one stage, but they then made it count.

Responding to media queries during his ongoing US trip on the «nest of Indian spies» in Australia, Albanese said, «Well, what I do is act diplomatically and have those discussions, and that will, no doubt, be something that is raised.
