National Conference to prioritise lifting of AFSPA if voted to power in J-K, says Omar Abdullah
National Conference will prioritise the lifting of AFSPA from Jammu and Kashmir and put an end to the «unjust harassment faced by Kashmiri youth» if it is voted to power, party vice-president Omar Abdullah said on Saturday. Abdullah had pitched for the revocation of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in 2012 when he was chief minister of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state. He had even announced that AFSPA would be revoked during his tenure but the proposal faced strong opposition from the Army. «The party (National Conference) reiterates its unwavering dedication to fulfilling the promises outlined in our manifesto. Once in power, the National Conference-led government will prioritise the lifting of AFSPA, putting an end to the unjust harassment faced by our youth,» Abdullah said as he welcomed prominent political activists into the party.

White House races to lend billions in climate funds before election
The $400 billion federal clean-energy lending program that has faced criticism for moving too slow is stepping up efforts to push cash out the door before the election. The Energy Department’s Loan Programs Office was turbocharged by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which gave it hundreds of billions of dollars to lend to clean-energy businesses. So far, it has only used a tiny fraction of that capacity.

RBI Guv Shaktikanta Das attributes India's Q1 GDP fall to EC model code of conduct, reduced spending; says 'growth story is intact'
economic growth decelerated to 6.7% in the April-June quarter of 2024, marking a 15-month low. This slowdown contrasts sharply with the 8.2% growth recorded in the same period last year. According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, the primary reason for this slowdown was reduced government spending due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct during the recent Lok Sabha elections. Das noted, «The Reserve Bank projected a growth rate of 7.1% for the first quarter. However, the first advance estimation data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed the growth rate at 6.7%.»

Petition lacks merit: Delhi HC dismisses plea challenging election of Nitish Kumar as JDU President
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as President of the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)). The court found no substantial reason to interfere with the election results and deemed the petition to be without merit. This decision upholds Nitish Kumar's position as the party president. The bench of Justice Pushpender Kumar Kaurav in an order passed on August 29, noted that the reliefs sought by the petitioner, fall wholly outside the ambit of the inquiry contemplated under Section 29A of the RP Act. As elucidated in the preceding discussion, the principles established in the case of Sadiq Ali (supra) do not support the reliefs sought in this writ petition.

Kamala Harris is aiming to make history as America's first Black and South Asian woman president — but she has not leaned into the prospect. Instead, Harris has steered well clear of mentioning race and gender during speeches, rallies and the first press conference of her lightning campaign. The 59-year-old Democrat has also refused to engage with Republican rival Donald Trump and his allies when they have tried to bait her by questioning her racial identity and making sexist attacks.

Will Trump challenge U.S election results if he loses? Things may be difficult this time
Donald Trump, would not accept the outcome if he is defeated in the 2024 election. He's been outspoken about the Democrats' decision to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris, referring to it as a «coup» and suggesting that the results are already predetermined. Though rare, Trump and his allies still insist that voting by non-citizens is commonplace. In addition, he said that he would only accept the election results if he thought that «everything's honest,» implying that he was prepared to contest the results if he had second thoughts, as per the reports of MSN. It's possible that the winner of the Trump-Harris race won't be clear by November 6, the day after the election. Issues may also arise during the weeks before Congress counts the Electoral College votes on January 6. Trump's campaign co-manager hinted at a possible legal and political battle following the election, emphasizing that the outcome isn't final until the inauguration. The close race increases uncertainty on Election Day and beyond, with states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin lacking laws to process mail-in ballots quickly, potentially leading to a scenario where Trump appears ahead on election night, only to see his lead diminish as more votes are counted. ABC News turned down Vice President Kamala Harris' last-minute effort to alter the rules for her upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump. The request involved keeping both candidates' microphones unmuted throughout the 90-minute debate scheduled for September 10. Republicans viewed this as an attempt by Harris to gain an advantage, which led to days of back-and-forth discussions between the two campaigns, as per the reports of the New York Post.

Kamala Harris way ahead of Donald Trump in new poll after DNC
Republican Donald Trump has fallen behind Democrat Kamala Harris, 48%–43%. The results show an eight-point shift in the presidential contest from late June when Trump had an almost four-point lead over President Joe Biden in the poll. Significant changes in some important demographic groups that have historically been critical for Democrats, such as young people and Hispanic and Black voters, contributed to the vice president's slim lead. The largest shift has been that, among those earning less than $20,000 annually, a three-point lead for Trump over Biden in June has grown to a 23-point lead for Harris over Trump in August. J&K polls an agitation, not just election for BJP: G Kishan Reddy
agitation) for the BJP as the party strives to safeguard the rights of people of the Union Territory which he said the NC-Congress alliance is out to usurp. Reddy, who is also the party's election in-charge in J&K, alleged during an interaction in Jammu that the NC-Congress pre-poll alliance is a «black alliance» aimed at bringing back the «black law of Article 370», which he referred to as «Jinnah law». «BJP took a historic step in August 2019 but this black coalition of NC and Congress want to bring back Article 370 whose abrogation has liberated the people of J&K and given them the rights enshrined in the Constitution of Babasaheb Ambedkar,» said Reddy. To ensure that the rights of people of J&K are not snatched again, the BJP will work hard to keep the «dark forces» away in the interest of the people of J&K, he said. The BJP minister alleged that 46,000 people have been killed in J&K since 1947 because of the follies of the Congress, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He said the Congress has again joined hands with the Abdullahs of NC to destroy the region.
