Action Fighting Election Limelight Opinion country Lok Sabha Elections: In Bihar's Purnea, Independent Pappu Yadav overshadows NDA vs INDIA contest
NDA challenged by a determined INDIA bloc may be the big story of the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, but in a Bihar seat, the narrative has come to be centred around an Independent candidate. Situated in the state's northeastern corner, Purnea, named after the eponymous district, has been known to literature aficionados as the land where Phanishwar Nath Renu lived and breathed life into famous characters like Hiraman, played on the big screen by Raj Kapoor in 'Teesri Kasam'. In the battle for 2024, the place is hogging the limelight, primarily because of Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who according to some opinion polls, may turn out to be the dark horse when votes are counted on June 4. This is despite the fact that the NDA candidate is JD(U) MP who is aiming at a hat-trick while the INDIA bloc has thrown its weight behind Bima Bharti, who recently quit Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's party and was promptly rewarded by arch-rival Lalu Prasad with the RJD ticket.

Narendra Modi's speeches suggest he is «BJP's PM» and not India, claimed NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday. PM Modi should tell the people what he and his party will do for the country instead of attacking the opposition, said the 83-year-old NCP founder at a campaign rally in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Pawar was here to canvass for opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidates Chandrakant Khaire, who is contesting from the Aurangabad Lok Sabha constituency on a Sena (UBT) ticket, and Congress' Kalyan Kale from Jalna. The central Maharashtra constituencies, located in the state's Marathwada region, will go to polls in the fourth phase on May 13.

Fighting Election President Experts War Week of Iran-Israel strikes marks a Mideast ‘Game Changer’
Israel ended with relief Friday after Tehran declared it had defeated what it said was a small attack on its territory by Israeli drones. But while the strike, which Israel didn’t officially claim, avoided touching off fresh escalation for now, there was no escaping that the tit-for-tat exchange ushered in a new era where the two adversaries look more willing to fight each other directly rather than through proxies. And that, government officials and experts fear, could lead to open war.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for not fighting Lok Sabha polls from the Amethi constituency, Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra questioned the intentions of Wayanad MP, saying that he could have opted for any other seat rather than contesting from a minority-dominated constituency. «What made Rahul Gandhi contest from Wayanad? Why did he escape from Amethi? I do agree that he has lost the confidence of the people of Amethi. But he is contesting from Wayanad where more than 70 per cent of people are from the minority community. Did he not get any other safe seat other than from a minority-dominated Wayanad? What message is he trying to give the country?» Vijayendra told ANI. On Rahul Gandhi's claim that BJP would not win more than 150 seats, Vijayendra said, «Instead of focusing on how many seats BJP is going to win, he should focus on his party.»

COST Provident Manufacturing Fighting awards Hyundai Car buyer wins Rs 15 lakh compensation as company couldn't fix engine fault despite multiple seizures
Hyundai Motors India was ordered by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) to pay Rs 15.1 lakh to Sukhjinder Singh, an owner of a Hyundai Verna car. This judgement came after Hyundai Motors India failed to rectify the car's problem and instead decided to fight against the legal order to replace the car's engine, in various consumer forums for almost 10 years. This long legal fight, was ultimately lost by Hyundai Motor India, in which the commission concluded that the manufacturer needed to replace the car's engine. However, considering the time taken for this fight to conclude, NCDRC ordered Hyundai Motors India to refund the car's purchase price plus accumulated interest to Singh. «In the present case, the car was purchased on 17.08.2011. As on date, over 13 years in its usable life have already lapsed. Even if the engine is replaced today, its utilisation is for a very limited time and the Complainant will not be able to benefit from the investment he made. This situation emerged due to non-compliance of the order of the District forum by Hyundai Motor India LTD on 17.06.2016 to replace the engine of the car,» said NCDRC at the case's hearing.

Waves Fighting Election community President 2020 Family rival Hanuman Beniwal makes it challenging for turncoat Jyoti Mirdha
Mirdha and Hanuman Beniwal faced each other in Nagaur in 2019, but this time the contest has a twist. The plain-speaking Beniwal, president of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, was a part of BJP-led NDA in 2019 who defeated Congress candidate Mirdha. Beniwal, however, walked out of NDA in 2020 over the farm legislations and later vociferously opposed the Agniveer scheme. Considered close to Congress veteran Ashok Gehlot, Beniwal is now an INDIA bloc candidate fighting a tough battle. Mirdha, on the other hand, is now with BJP. Her grandfather Nathuram Mirdha was an influential Congressman who represented the seat six times and was the only MP to be elected from the party in 1977 during the Janata Party wave. Like the rest of Rajasthan, caste is the main factor. The saying goes that when two Jats clash, the community votes for the one who would be more effective in representing the community. «Every community wants their own powerful leader,» Mirdha said, brushing aside the suggestion that her gender was an issue. «Jats are a progressive community. They educate their daughters. I have never felt any less a leader because I am a woman. Also, they have known my family for generations. They know how we have worked for them.»

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is putting up a «brave fight» against the BJP, Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday said that his actions suggest otherwise and alleged Gandhi is «hesitant» to contest from the BJP-ruled states. He further alleged that Gandhi seeks refuge in states with considerably high minority population. Azad took a dig at Gandhi and National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah, referring to them as «spoon-fed kids» rather than politicians, and said that both have done nothing on their own. «Why is Rahul Gandhi hesitant to contest in the BJP-ruled states? While Gandhi claims to be fighting the BJP, his actions suggest otherwise. Why fly from the BJP-ruled states and seek refuge in minority-dominated ones?» Azad said while addressing public meetings in Sangaldan, Ukhral areas of the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency.

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the PM’s hands shook while trying to explain the electoral bonds fiasco in a recent media interview. “The electoral bonds are the biggest scam the nation has ever seen…the BJP government used the bonds to extort money off businesses that suddenly found themselves the target of central agencies like the CBI, ED and Income Tax Department,” he said, speaking in a rally in Mandya nine days before the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in the state. Gandhi was on his first visit to the state after the poll schedule was announced a month ago. Praising the Congress regime in the state, he said the party had fulfilled all the guarantees it had promised before the assembly polls last year.
